Some of my earlier colleagues used to criticize me that I prefer ladies for guiding them for Mtechs and PhDs, this was baseless stuff.
It is naturally and inherently true that men would have soft corner for women, this is ingrained because of long evolutionary process, but in this particular case, I have seen that more ladies are more interested in pursuing the PhDs (even if their husbands didn't have such degrees) than more men are; and in most cases, the men's ego prevents them getting guidance from other men; this I saw during my job at the private college for five years.
But, while I was in the previous organization, I had three ladies and three men under my guidance for their PhDs.
In the private college also, I had 4 gents and 6 ladies under my guidance.
(For five of these I was a co-guide).
I consider that more ladies are less egoistic than more men are.
Also, these women candidates were very sincere and highly focussed.
Inherently, the ladies have more respectful, and dedicated nature, i.e. despite the risk involved in interacting with male guides, and seniors; they still do seek the mentorship from them.
My four lady students once celebrated my birthday and invited me and my wife in a very costly hotel some three years ago.
