GST Portal – A Technical Failure Analysis Nine Years After Launch
The GST portal (GSTN), conceived as a digital revolution in India for return filing, ITC matching, payments, and compliance, remains plagued by technical glitches even nine years after launch—frequent data saving failures, disappearing drafts, login loops, OTP delays, JSON validation errors, slow performance in GSTR-3B and GSTR-1 filing, and server crashes during peak deadlines. In March 2026, widespread errors like "unable to load template" and auto-logout forced a last-minute deadline extension; earlier in January 2025, GSTR-1 summary generation failed entirely. CAG reports have exposed poor mapping of business rules in registration modules, operational deficiencies in payment systems, and data inconsistencies. Root causes include insufficient server capacity for high traffic, outdated architecture, over-dependence on technical partners like Infosys, and inadequate testing before deadlines. Small businesses suffer the most, facing penalties, notices, and massive compliance burdens. Despite government efforts like offline utilities and helpdesk upgrades, these remain insufficient. Long-term fixes require implementing CAG recommendations, adopting cloud-based scalable architecture, and prioritizing user feedback. The GST portal has digitized compliance but its technical weaknesses seriously undermine "Ease of Doing Business"—taxpayers should keep backups and raise tickets, but unless the portal becomes robust and user-friendly, chaos and frustration will continue.
