The moral animal:
Sometimes we believe that people having highest of education, status and money have higher social and moral values, but I regret to say that it is not always true.
We sometimes equate high social status with good people and when we find such examples and cases cited by you then we are taken aback and feel sorry for the old people who are suffering.
Many rich people commit most henious crimes, including murdering their relatives and friends for money, then we really have to believe that our species is basically 'animal'.
And the culturally and socially developed moral values are not so deeply imbibed in us.
