Using Your Mobile in the Dark: Give Your Eyes a Little Relief
Smartphones have become an important part of our everyday lives. But many people continue using their phones for long periods after turning off the lights, especially at night.
When you look at a bright screen in a dark room, the difference between the screen brightness and the surrounding environment can make your eyes feel more strained. Prolonged screen use may contribute to eye fatigue, dryness, irritation, headaches and general discomfort.
This does not mean that using a phone in the dark will suddenly damage your eyes. However, long periods of screen use without adequate lighting or breaks can be uncomfortable for your eyes.
Dr. Anchal Gupta’s Message
“Our eyes work throughout the day, and often we do not give them enough time to rest at night. Using a mobile phone is not the problem, but using it for long periods in the dark is not a healthy habit. Give your eyes adequate lighting, a comfortable viewing distance and regular breaks.”
Simple habits for healthier screen use:
• Avoid using your phone in a completely dark room.
• Keep a soft, comfortable light on when using screens at night.
• Keep your phone at a comfortable distance from your eyes.
• Take regular breaks during prolonged screen use.
• Remember to blink frequently.
• Try to reduce screen time before going to bed.
Your phone may be part of your daily routine, but giving your eyes time to rest should be too.
