One of my most profound memories from school days is being punished for smiling in the class. The truth is that most of the time I had no idea what was going on especially in mathematics and chemistry class. I used to sit there looking at the board and the teacher, trying to figure out what was happening and I would invariably smile. The teacher would notice this and ask me a question, the answer to which I didn’t know. They would then punish me by making me stand or by throwing me out of the class.
The funny part is that most of the time it was not the fact that I did not know the answer that got their goat but the fact that I was smiling.
I wonder why.
