Today is Bhagat Singh's 115th birth anniversary. He was born on September 28, 1907, in pre-partition Punjab's Banga Lyallpur, western Punjab, India (now in Pakistan). Bhagat Singh is among the tallest leaders of the Indian freedom struggle and revolutionary hero of the Indian independence movement.
On December 17, 1927, the revolutionaries Bhagat Singh and Shivaram Rajguru shot and killed Assistant superintendent of police John Saunders. They were supported in this act by their compatriots Sukhdev Thapar and Chandrashekhar Azad.
Bhagat Singh was convicted of the murder of John Saunders and Channan Singh, and hanged in March 1931, aged 23. He became a popular folk hero after his death.
