Maandavadi (માંડવડી) is a special type of Garba. It invokes the Divine Mother - the Mother of the Universe - the feminine form of divinity - the constant, immortal, eternal, divine, ever-present GOD in the form of Maa Adyashakti Durga ....
The word Garba comes from the Sanskrit phrase - Garbha Deep - meaning the "Womb Lamp" - symbolizing the Mother of the Universe in the form of a lit up earthen lamp placed in a beautifully decorated earthen pot having tiny holes around it, from which glittering rays of the lit lamp inside it spread out and glow. The ladies place the "Garba" or "Garbha Deep" so prepared on their head with a feeling of blissful veneration or place lit lamps on a little colourfully decorated wooden platform called "Maandavi" or "Maandavadi" to be subsequently mounted on their heads and dancing to the tunes of the "Maandavadi" song, carry them to the place where the Garba / Maandavadi is to be consecrated for worship for the nine days of the Navaratri Festival. Now a days, the tradition of placing a picture or statue of Maa Amba (another name of Maa Durga) is more prevalent. The Garba and Raas Dances are performed in concentric circles / rings around the Garba / Maandavadi / picture of the Mother Goddess for nine days during Navaratri Festival.
The Maandavadi Dance is typically done with the Garba / Maandavadi carried on the heads of the dancers, bringing along the Goddess for consecration and the lyrics of the song describe the beauty and joy and elation associated with the whole celebration.
