The Language of Silence - Part 2

(To fully understand this story, you must read Part 1 first. What follows is the next step in a tale that begins with a girl’s silence…)

Life had started to shift for Arjun — a new city, unfamiliar faces, and now… a growing curiosity: Avya.

That first morning in college had stirred something inside him. The silent girl, the one everyone called "strange" — Arjun had seen her differently. Not with judgment, but with a quiet urge to understand.

That evening, sitting in his room, Arjun opened his diary and wrote:

> “Today I saw a girl… She didn’t say a word, yet it felt like she said everything.
I don’t know why… but her silence is unsettling something in me.”

The next day, his eyes searched for her — in the classroom, the library, the cafeteria…
And then, he saw her.

She was seated at the far end of the library, lost in books. But she wasn’t reading — she was just flipping pages, as if searching for a memory. Arjun gathered his courage and walked up… but said nothing.

Just then, a voice behind him spoke —

> “You’re watching her too, aren’t you? Everyone does… but no one really sees her.”

It was Avya’s younger sister, Anvi.

Startled, Arjun turned to her.

> “You know her?”
“She’s my sister. Her name is Avya. And yes, she can speak… She just chooses not to anymore.”

> “Why?”
That single word felt heavy in his chest.

Anvi paused for a moment and replied softly —

> “Everyone has a reason behind their silence. My sister’s reason… is painful.
But why should I tell you? Who are you to her?”

Arjun smiled gently.

> “Maybe… no one yet. But I want to understand her silence.
Maybe I can be something — a good friend, or simply… someone she can trust.”

Anvi looked into his eyes for the first time.

> “Do you understand the language of eyes instead of words?”
Arjun replied, “Sometimes… silence is the loudest scream.”

From that day on, Arjun started to stay close to Avya — not saying much, not expecting anything.
Just… reading the language of her eyes.

One afternoon, in the cafeteria, Avya dropped her notebook. Arjun picked it up.
On the last page, a sentence was scribbled:

> “There’s so much inside me… but I don’t feel like speaking.”

Arjun gently handed it back and said:

> “Whether you speak or not, I’m here… listening.”

For a moment, Avya looked at him.
There was a shimmer of emotion in her eyes. She didn’t speak — she simply nodded.
It wasn’t a “yes.” It wasn’t a “no.”
It was an emotional acknowledgment, louder than words.

Arjun now knew:
To bring Avya out of her silence, he didn’t need to be loud…
He needed to be calm. Present. Patient.
And he was ready — to stand beside her, quietly listening to every unspoken word.
