We consider a process model of our self:
1. Our own self; you me, others, etc.
2. The greatest Self, i.e. known as Paramatma (the superior or supreme self); since we are humans, we in general depict this self in many ways similar to our own self, but with higher level of supreme virtues, and aspire to reach him/her in our own life time.
***
The first one is physical reality as we can see, feel and experience our own self; the second one is absolute one and is called as supreme reality, which is just our imagination, and thought (astral/subtle model) that it should be existing, but it may be there or may not be, nobody really knows for sure; yet it does serve some purpose of an idealistic destination or goal to be attained.

Now, there is a procedure mentioned in the holy book Geeta:
One can see the (greatest) Self, in (our own) self by the help of the self (our own efforts) by following one or more of the following means:
a. by the process of contemplation/meditation.
b. by the union of the knowledge (with our own self).
c. by the union of the action (with our own self).
