Today is Guru Dattatreya Jayanti!!🙏🙏

Pearls of Wisdom.

Rishi Mandavya was deep in samadhi. A King was passing by and came to his ashram. The Rishi was oblivious to his presence. The King became angry and sentenced the Rishi to death the next morning.

The Rishi’s wife came to know of this and commanded the sun not to rise!

An imbalance was created in all of creation and the Devas went to Sati Anasuya, the wife of Maharishi Atri for help. She convinced the Rishi’s wife to permit the sun to rise and assured her that she would bring the Rishi back to life.

Her intentions were so powerful that even the impossible became possible!

So the trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, wanting to show her glory further to the world, decided to test her.

They came to her ashram while the Rishi was away. She welcomed them and offered them food. They agreed to eat on the condition that she would feed them with no barriers.

She thought for a moment, prayed to the Devi, and turned the gods into infants and fed them. She embraced the three children and they became one child with three heads - Dattatreya. When all the three shaktis (Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh)come together that is the guru shakti. Dattatreya is the embodiment of wisdom and bliss.

Anasuya is one with no doubts, and sees no faults. Wonder and the spirit of enquiry blossoms in such a mind. In innocence there are no inhibitions. And an inhibition-free intellect is where wisdom dawns.

A king once met Dattatreya in the forest and was struck by his radiance and peace.

He asked the young Saint about his guru. Dattatreya replied that the Atman is his guru and that knowledge flows to him from all sides. Everything in creation is permeated by wisdom that leads one towards the Brahman.

He is surrounded by 4 dogs representing the 4 Vedas. The word for dog in Sanskrit is Shwana which also means “no yesterday or no tomorrow”. It is a symbol of a mind in the present moment. The Vedas are timeless wisdom and lead you to the depth of the present moment.

Dattatreya was the guru for Parashurama and their conversation is the Tripura Rahasya - a beautiful treatise on the qualities of the pure consciousness.
