खरेतर झाले असे की भूजएअरबेसवर असलेल्या indra-II या रडारने भारताच्या हद्दीत आलेल्या पाकिस्तानच्या ६ जेट्स ना पकडले. इंद्रा -II हे प्रामुख्याने जमिनीच्या जवळून येणाऱ्या विमानांना पकडण्यासाठी वापरले जाते. ते जुन्या पिढीचे रडार आहे. सीमेवर तैनात असणाऱ्या इंद्रा -II ने सुरवातीला सिग्नल दिले की समोरून येणारी विमाने 'मिराज' आहेत कारण शत्रूच्या त्यांच्या विमानाची उंची आणि वेग हा मिराजसारखा होता. इंद्रा -II च्या डेटावर विश्वास ठेवून भारताने आधी तेजसला उड्डाणाची परवानगी दिली.
तिन्ही तेजस आपल्या इंजिनचा आवाज करत होती जशी काय ते गुरगुरत आहेत आणि डरकाळी फोडून मिराजवर तुटून पडणार आहेत.
तिन्ही पायलटच्या कानात आवाज घुमला.
ATC : "All units, this is Hercules. Mission 'Mirage Hunt' is now active. Authentication code: Alpha-Bravo-Niner. All pilots, sign-in."
तेजस १ चा पायलट Therimachus (Lead) : "Hercules, this is Therimachus. Systems green. Oxygen nominal. Weapons armed. Sign-in complete. Ready for takeoff."
Diecoon (Pilot 2) : "Hercules, this is Diecoon. Engine parameters stable. Radar online. Sign-in complete. Waiting for your go."
Creontiades (Pilot 3) : "Hercules, this is Creontiades. Fuel state full. Avionics checked. Sign-in complete. Let's do this."
Hercules (ATC) : "Copy that, flight. Therimachus, Diecoon, Creontiades... you are cleared for immediate takeoff. Runway 0-9. Wind calm. Surface temperature 32 degrees. Rise and shine, boys!"
Therimachus : "Roger that, Hercules. Releasing brakes. Increasing thrust. Diecoon, Creontiades... on my mark. 3... 2... 1... Engaging Afterburners!"
क्षणार्धात तीनही विमानांच्या मागे निळ्या-केशरी ज्वाला निघाल्या आणि ती आकाशात झेपावली. Therimachus चा आवाज नेहमीप्रमाणे खंबीर होता, पण Diecoon च्या आवाजात आज एक वेगळीच धार होती. शेवटी लीडरला खंबीर रहावेच लागते.
प्रचंड वेगाने तेजस घुसखोरी केलेल्या विमानांच्या दिशेने जात होते. हेडफोन्समध्ये 'Hercules' चा भारदस्त आवाज घुमला.
Hercules (ATC) : "Therimachus, Diecoon, Creontiades... this is Hercules. Enemy Mirages spotted 40 miles North-West of your position. Altitude 15,000 feet. You are cleared to intercept. Happy hunting!"
Therimachus (Lead Pilot) : "Roger that, Hercules. This is Therimachus. We have the target on radar. Formation stable. Diecoon, Creontiades... go to combat power. Engage afterburners!"
Diecoon (Pilot 2) : "Copy that, Lead. Diecoon is hot. Switching to missile lock mode."
Creontiades (Pilot 3) : "Creontiades here. I’m covering your six, Lead. Let’s bring them down."
अचानक ATC मध्ये गोंधळ उडाला. रोहिणी रडारच्या स्क्रीनसमोर बसलेला Radar Officer घामेघाम झाला होता.
रडार ऑपरेटर : "सर, आपण फसलो आहे. इंद्रा -II ने दिलेला डाटा आणि रोहिणी रडारने दिलेला डाटा यात फरक आहे."
"काय?"
"रोहिणीने पकडलेल्या सिग्नल नुसार इंद्रा -II ने दिलेला डाटा चुकीचा आहे. ते मिराज नाहीत, ते तर F-16 Falcon आहेत. अमेरिकेची प्रगतशील विमाने."
"Oh my God. Connect to team."
"Done."
Hercules (ATC): "Break away! Break away! Therimachus, do you copy? Rohini radar confirms signatures are changing. Those are NOT Mirages! I repeat, those are F-16 Falcons. Abort mission immediately!"
Therimachus (Lead): "What?! Hercules, verify! We are already in the kill zone!"
Hercules: "Negative, Therimachus! It’s a trap. Indra-2 was jammed. Return to base. Push for Mach 1.5. Now! Therimachus, Diecoon and Creontiades... return to the home. Lycus is more powerful than usual. I repeat return to the home."
तेजस विमाने वेगाने आपल्या तळाकडे वळत होती, पण एफ-१६ त्यांच्या अगदी जवळ आले होते. अचानक 'Creontiades' च्या कॉकपिटमध्ये एक कर्कश आणि वेगवान आवाज घुमला— 'बीप-बीप-बीप-बीप!'
Creontiades: "Lead, I have a radar lock on me! F-16s are behind us! We need to bank hard!"
Hercules (ATC): "Creontiades, break left! Break left! Missile launch detected! I repeat, Fox-2 incoming! Deploy flares now!"
Creontiades: "Copy that, Hercules! Breaking left... Popping flares! Engaging Chaff!"
विमानातून उष्णता सोडणारे 'Flares' सोडले जेणेकरून मिसाईल भरकटेल. विमानाचे नोज त्याने वेगाने वळवले.
Diecoon: "Lead, Creontiades is in trouble! I'm banking to draw their fire. Therimachus, cover us!"
Therimachus (Lead): "Negative, Diecoon! Stay in formation. Hercules, we are 10 miles from the border. Requesting immediate SAM (Surface-to-Air Missile) cover!"
Hercules: "Copy, Therimachus. Our Air Defense is active. Bring them closer. We are locking onto the F-16s. Stay low, stay fast!"
Creontiades (श्वास जोरात घेत): "Missile passed! That was close, Hercules."
Hercules: "Braveheart flight, you are entering the safety zone. Runway is clear. Don't look back. Just fly!"
Therimachus : "copy that."
भूज एअरबेस आता त्यांच्या दृष्टीक्षेपात आला होता. पाकिस्तानला वाटले की तिन्ही विमान घाबरून परत गेली. त्यांनी त्यांच्या ATC ला कळवले.
इकडे भूज एअरबेसवर,
Therimachus: "Hercules, this is Therimachus. Initiating defensive maneuvers. We are coming home. Requesting emergency corridor for landing!"
तेजस आता लँडिंग गियर उघडणार होते.
Therimachus (Lead): "Hercules, this is Therimachus. We have crossed the fence. All three units are home. Requesting final approach for landing. Creontiades is on fumes, he goes first."
Hercules (ATC): "Copy that, Therimachus. Creontiades, you are clear for Runway 2-7. Diecoon, hold pattern at 2,000 feet. Therimachus, you are number three. Welcome back, boys. You did a hell of a job."
Creontiades: "Roger, Hercules. Gear down... Flaps set... Touching down in 3... 2... 1... Touchdown! I'm on the ground. Rolling out."
Creonatides उतरले आणि हँगरच्या दिशेने निघाले.
Diecoon: "Diecoon is down. Safe and sound."
Therimachus: "Lead is down. All units accounted for."
विमाने त्यांच्या हँगरमध्ये (Hangar) उभी राहिली आणि इंजिनचा आवाज हळूहळू शांत झाला. आता वेळ होती अधिकृत साईन-ऑफची.
Hercules (ATC): "Therimachus, Diecoon, Creontiades... This is Hercules. Mission 'Mirage Hunt' is officially terminated. Status: Success. No losses, confirmed enemy retreat. Excellent flying, Falcons. Go get some rest. Hercules, signing off."
Therimachus: "Hercules, this is Therimachus. It was a tough day, but the birds performed like a dream. Switching off avionics. Sign-off complete."
Diecoon: "Diecoon, sign-off complete. See you at the debrief."
Creontiades: "Creontiades, sign-off complete. Thanks for having our back, Hercules."
Hercules ने बापाची भूमिका निभावली होती. तिन्ही मुले सुखरूप मृत्यूच्या दाढेतून ओढून आणली होती.
प्रत्युत्तर तर द्यायचं होत पण झाले असे होते की पाकिस्तान अमेरिकेने भेट म्हणून दिलेले F-16 Fighting Falcon घेऊन आले होते आणि आता ते भारत पाकिस्तान सागरी सीमेवर घुटमळत होते. इकडे भुज एअरबेसवर फक्त संपूर्ण भारतीय बनावटीची 'तेजस' पूर्ण क्षमतेने तैनात होती. त्यात पाकिस्तानने केलेल्या ट्विटमुळे सगळे खवळले होते.
"विंग कमांडर डी. आशू , स्कॉड्रन लीडर सत्यजित, स्कॉड्रन लीडर केदार आणि फ्लाईट लेफ्टनंट एकलव्य तुम्ही चौघे स्पेशल मिशनवर जात आहात. ५ मिनिटांत वॉर रूममध्ये जमा." ऑफिसर येऊन सांगून गेले.
