Trembling Shadows

A romantic, psychological thriller

Kotra Siva Rama Krishna

“Then what made you yell like this?” her mother came near to her and asked filling her voice with all the smoothness and love.

“A snake ……… A very big snake………” Sameera said. “It was very black. Black like darkness. It created lot of fear in me. It was coming slowly into the kitchen through that window and I had seen it. When it disappeared I have not noticed at all.” looking into the eyes of her mother Sameera said.

“No doubt you have imagined this” Tanuja said. “If there was any snake where it had gone by the time we came here?”

“A snake can move very fast. There is no surprise at all if it has gone away by the time we came here” Rajesh said.

“Or it might be dropped itself into the kitchen as well. It might have hidden somewhere in it” Malathi said.

“There is such a chance as well. This kitchen is very big and there are some unused and dusty objects as well here. The snake might have lurked behind something heavy and big here. Sameera said it was in very black colour. So it is surely a cobra. A cobra’s bite is quite dangerous. It is quite better if we keep ourselves away from this kitchen. Luckily there is no necessity to us to cook anything here” Rajesh said.

“Then better we all vacate this place now itself. Why should we stand here anymore?” Saying so Vinod moved out of that room and the others followed him silently.

“Is there any guarantee that snake would not come to any other place in this house?” Tanuja asked with a voice full of fear.

“You are creating unnecessary doubts and making us even more fearful.” Rajesh said uneasily. He felt some odd fear and it was evident in his face and voice “But if it is true that our daughter had seen a snake in the kitchen, there is a possibility that it would come into the other places in this house.”

“What should we do Rajesh? All this is making me very much fearful” with a shivering tone Tanuja asked. “A cobra’s bite is quite dangerous.”

Then Rajesh realized what mistake he did. As he had shown his fear so his wife’s fear had become even more intensified. It was not just her and it appeared that the other people as well entertaining the same fear after he said so. He was the person meant to lead the other people there so he should not show his fear out however intensive it was at sometimes. His immediate obligation was to allay the fears in the minds of the people there.

“No, it would not be like that” he said firmly. “I am quite sure that the snakes would not come into the places where people are moving. In all the other places in this house we are moving freely. So we need not feel fear unnecessarily that this snake may come into the other places of the house.”

“If it is so there is no problem, but …” Tanuja tried to say something

“Don’t think about that snake at all. No danger would come by that snake to us. I am quite sure of that” Rajesh was trying to cover his irritation and fear.

Tanuja did not say anything. She knew that her husband too could not do anything immediately then. It seemed that they had to stay atleast two or three days in that place. The only remedy available then was that they need to be careful.

“Anyhow in my opinion that all of us shall be in our care.” She said as that was the conclusion to that topic.

“Quite a right thing you said. We all remember” Rajesh said in a plain voice.

That place was in semi darkness. Sunanda could see the person who stood before her only partially. His eyes were red and he had a big face. He let grow his hair upto his shoulders. The oddest thing in him was he did not wear anything at all. Her whole heart was filled with fear and she wanted to yell. But nothing was produced out of her mouth and it was like someone squeezing her throat. There was fear, anxiety and tension full in her. She was surprising why she was not swooned even after facing such a terrifying situation.

She was trying to go away from him but could not move even an inch. She was struggling to remember where she was but her mind was not cooperating with her. Surprisingly she had forgotten who she was too. That person was looking only at her while approaching her with small steps. He was intimidating, fearsome. His eyes were like two red burning charcoals. Her whole heart was filled with fear and she could think very little.

Unintentionally she looked at herself and she shuddered at once. There came a shock even to her numb mind. There was not even a speck of cloth on her body and she was fully naked. How and when she became naked like that? As far as she could remember she did not undress herself. Who made her naked then? She was almost fainting and her mind was not in a position to perceive anything. Her subconscious was saying that something great bad was going to happen to her and she was not at all in position to stop that.

As she was fearing and worrying like that without knowing what to do, that person approached her quite near. He slowly placed his two hands on her shoulders and they were so cold as they were of a dead man’s. There was no expression on his face. He slowly taken her into his hands and leapt her of the earth and kept in his hands. She could not move at all. Her mind was not at all working. But she could guess a little what he was going to do to her and her conscience urged her to stop that but none of the limbs in her body was cooperating with her.

Slowly he put her down on the bed there. Then she could remember that she was in the upstairs room. Then he started working on her. He kissed roughly on the forehead of her. He felt his lips very cold. His body as well was very cold. She was suffering like hell and there was no pleasure whatsoever to her in that sexual act. If she had got any strength at all in her she would have kicked him out from her. But there was only weakness in her. She could not move even her little finger. Then he reached her mouth and for some minutes her mouth was mercilessly crushed under his mouth.

Sex was not new to her. She never had taken it as a sinful act either. Even though her relationship with Anand was not good recently, she could enjoy sex with him. But this time she really felt very much painful and bad. This beast concentrated only on getting the maximum pleasure to himself. Hot tears started flowing down on her cheeks as his whole body moving heavily on top of her while he was cruelly satisfying his lust with her. Helpless cries emitted out from her mouth when the smooth private parts of her body became victims of his rough hands and mouth. She had lost all sense.

When she opened her eyes again she was on the same bed middle room upstairs and her body was full of sweat. Surprisingly she found herself fully dressed. There was no pain in her either. So it was all a dream, thank God, she thought. But what a dreadful dream! How that dream appeared such real to her then? In the first place why she had got such a dream at all? Who was that man appeared to her in the dream? She never had seen such a person before. But even in that semi darkness as well she could see him clearly. How brutally he raped her! Every organ in her body had become a victim to him. The most ironical thing in all of that was, even there was intense pain to her in that brutal rape, her body enjoyed it also as it never enjoyed with anyone else before. How a rape in the hands of a paranormal thing could be enjoyable to her like that, Sunanda could not understand.

Even she realized that it was only a dream and she was not raped really, she could not get rid of her fear fully. It suddenly appeared to her that there was something seriously wrong with that room. Otherwise she would not have got such a dream at all. She had got so many terrifying dreams before then too but she never had got such type of a dream. Even that rape was enjoyable to her, that creature which did it filling her heart with intensive fear! She had decided that it would be dangerous to stay in that room any longer. Hurriedly she made her loosened hair as a single plait and threw it back. Then she came out of the bed and went speedily to downstairs.

“You are appearing quite disturbed. What happened?” looking at Sunanda, Tanuja asked.

“Oh, I just cannot say what happened. It was such a shameful and fearful dream I have got. What all you people are doing here?’ looking at them surprisingly Sunanda asked.

“Only you have missed in this episode until now. I am thinking it is quite apt if Sameera herself explains to you what happened.” Rajesh said.

“To explain there is not much big thing in it at all.” Sameera said. “I have seen a very big black snake in the kitchen” Then she looked at Sunanda and she too appeared quite disturbed. What might have happened? Sameera surprised

“You have seen a black snake? Are you sure?” Sunanda asked with fear and surprise.

“Everyone asking me so!  I am not in a habit of imagining things. If my thinking is right I have seen a dangerous cobra crawled into the kitchen through the window there.” She said angrily and paused a moment before continuing “How nice it would be if that snake appears before all of us now!”

“We all shall believe completely what you are saying but please don’t try to pray in such a way” Sunanda said pleadingly. “Already there are so many things creating lot of fear in us. We don’t need a snake too to make us even more frighten.”

“You are right. First I have got the creepy feeling of cold touch on me in that room. After that you have got the feeling of cold hand touch in the kitchen. And this snake.” She paused for a moment and said “It seems that you are as well quite disturbed for something”

“Of course, yes” looking into the face of Sameera, Sunanda said. “I have got a very fearful, horrifying dream upstairs. I am feeling so shame that I have got such a dream. How much pain I have suffered in it! How much fearful I have become! I just cannot explain. Oh, it is quite horrifying, terrific!” There were still traces of fear and anxiety in her voice.

“However much you might be suffered in it, just try to remember that it is only a dream. Only fools feel fear towards dreams. Anyhow tell us first what that dream is?” Anand looking pitifully at his wife asked. He was not feeling any anger towards her then. He started trying to behave in the way Aravind suggested. He was already feeling lot of love and affection towards her.

“No, I cannot tell that. I never can tell anyone what that dream is. It is such a bad dream” Sunanda said despairingly.

“Alright then, but you need not feel fear anymore. We shall see nothing would happen to you. It seems quite better to you to go upstairs and take rest there.” The love in his voice then was automatic.
