2 जुलाई 1995 की रात। दिल्ली की हवा में घुटन थी, जैसे शहर खुद किसी बोझ को छुपा रहा हो। अशोका रोड की एक बर्फ फैक्ट्री के पास, बग्गा रेस्तरां से घना, काला धुआं उठ रहा था। फैक्ट्री मालिक ने जब धुएं को देखा, तो उसे लगा कि कुछ जल रहा है — लेकिन यह कोई सामान्य आग नहीं थी। पुलिस टीम मौके पर पहुँची। रेस्तरां में बने बड़े तंदूर से धुआं निकल रहा था। जब पुलिस ने ध्यान से देखा, तो उन्हें कुछ अधजला मांस जैसा कुछ दिखा। आग बुझाई गई। राख में से निकली जली हुई हड्डियाँ, अधजली कलाई पर बंधी घड़ी, और एक गहरी, असहनीय गंध — इंसानी शरीर के जलने की गंध।
