चीड़ के पेड़ों की टहनियां तेज हवा के दबाव से जोरां से हिलती हैं सायं-सायं के कनफोडू षोर से काँंप उठती हूँ। इन चीड़ों से ढेर सूखी पिरूल भी लगातार झर रही है। ऊपर चढ़ने की कोशिश करते पाँव नीचे फिसलने लगते हैं। इस पहाड़ी पर पहले से ही ढेर सा पिरूल जमा है, फिर नये पिरूल का गिरना जारी रहा तो चढ़ पाउंगी इस पहाड़ी की उकाल (चढ़ाई)? रीढ़ में सर्द लहर उठ रही है। क्या होगा मेरा? तलवार की धार पर चढ़ने वाली जिन्दगी और ये पहाड़ी! पिरूल पर बमुश्किल पाँव टिकाकर पीठ टटोलती हूँ, इस पर एक फँछा बंधा है, जिस के भीतर दो साल का बच्चा है। भूखा प्यासा सो गया है शायद! क्या सोचा होगा इसने-माँ कहां ले जा रही है? फँछे में बाँधकर, अपने घर से दूर पौ फटने से पहले?
