A Beautiful Beginning - 2

The evening sky was painted in shades of orange and pink as the sun slowly disappeared behind the tall buildings. A gentle breeze passed through the quiet park, carrying with it the scent of fresh flowers and the soft rustling of leaves. It was peaceful, almost magical—yet for Riya, everything felt unfamiliar.
She sat alone on a wooden bench, her hands tightly wrapped around her bag. This city was new, the people were strangers, and the life ahead of her felt uncertain. Just a few hours ago, she had arrived here with a heart full of hopes and a mind filled with questions.
“Was this the right decision?” she whispered to herself.
Moving to a new city wasn’t easy, especially when you leave behind everything you’ve ever known. Her home, her friends, her memories—all of it felt distant now. But deep inside, she knew she needed this change. She needed to start fresh.
Riya looked around the park. Couples were walking hand in hand, children were playing and laughing, and an old man was feeding birds near the fountain. Life seemed so normal for everyone else, yet she felt like she didn’t belong.
Lost in her thoughts, she didn’t notice someone approaching until a voice suddenly broke her silence.
“Excuse me… is this seat taken?”
Riya looked up, slightly startled. Standing in front of her was a young man, probably around her age. He had calm eyes, a soft smile, and something about him felt… different.
“No, it’s free,” she replied softly, moving slightly to make space.
“Thanks,” he said, sitting down beside her.
For a moment, there was silence. The kind of silence that feels awkward yet strangely comfortable at the same time. Riya tried to avoid eye contact, focusing instead on the ground.
“I haven’t seen you here before,” he said casually.
Riya hesitated for a second before replying, “I just moved here today.”
“Oh… new city?” he asked.
She nodded. “Yeah.”
“That must be tough,” he said, his tone gentle.
Riya looked at him, surprised. Not many people understood how difficult it was. “It is,” she admitted quietly.
He smiled. “Don’t worry. This city feels strange at first, but it slowly becomes home.”
His words were simple, but they carried a sense of comfort. For the first time that day, Riya felt a little less alone.
“I’m Aarav, by the way,” he said, extending his hand.
“Riya,” she replied, shaking it lightly.
There was something warm about his presence. Something that made her feel at ease, even though they had just met.
“So, what brought you here?” Aarav asked.
“College,” she said. “I got admission here.”
“That’s great! Which college?”
She told him the name, and his face lit up. “Really? I study there too.”
Riya’s eyes widened. “Seriously?”
“Yeah,” he laughed. “Looks like you already know someone on your first day.”
A small smile appeared on Riya’s face. It was the first genuine smile she had since arriving.
“Maybe this city isn’t so bad after all,” she thought.
They started talking more—about college, about the city, about small, random things. Aarav had an easy way of making conversations flow, and before Riya realized it, she was laughing.
Time passed quickly. The sky turned darker, and the park lights flickered on.
“I should go,” Riya said, standing up.
“Yeah, it’s getting late,” Aarav agreed. “Do you know your way back?”
“Not really,” she admitted.
“Don’t worry, I’ll walk with you,” he said.
They walked side by side along the quiet road. The streetlights cast long shadows, and the cool night air felt refreshing.
For some reason, Riya didn’t feel scared anymore.
Instead, she felt… safe.
As they reached her apartment, she stopped. “Thank you,” she said softly. “For everything.”
Aarav smiled. “Anytime.”
There was a brief pause, as if neither of them wanted the moment to end.
“See you tomorrow?” he asked.
Riya hesitated for a second, then nodded. “Yeah… see you.”
As she walked inside, her heart felt lighter than before.
Maybe this new beginning wasn’t as lonely as she had imagined.
But as she closed the door behind her, she couldn’t shake off one strange feeling—
Why did meeting a stranger feel like something important?
And why did it feel like this was just the beginning of something much bigger?
