Laughter in Darkness

A suspense, romantic and psychological thriller

By

Kotra Siva Rama Krishna

‘How I have got a bad dream like this?’ he thought in himself. ‘Sex with a woman other than his wife, how sinful it is!” then he remembered Mukinni. Mukinni, the female headed snake body bad angel always wanted these types of bad things. Was she the reason for his getting this bad dream?

Once again he thought about Neeraja. Even in that dream also Neeraja was so beautiful! However much beautiful she might be, he never would have dreamt like that unless there was some evil power behind that. It was some evil power in this house caused it or that Mukinni. Thinking like that he cannot remain much time on the bed. He wanted to go down stairs from there, then Sameera and Sunanda entered into that room with Arjun and Madhuri.

“Why both you have come here? I just want to come downstairs myself.” Aravind said.

“What we do even there either? Is it is a new place to us? We talk in this room itself.” Slumping herself in the chair nearby Madhuri with her, Sameera said.

“If it turns into a downpour we have to bind ourselves here.” Aravind said while looking at the falling down drizzle.

“Then it made you both remember the last time incident which happened in this room exactly at this time while down-pouring outside.” While placing herself in the chair beside Sameera, Sunanda said while taking Arjun into her lap.

“Do you need to remind us both about that now?” with an irritating expression in her face, Sameera asked her.

“What’s wrong? Why should not I? Was it not a beautiful first experience between you both?” knitting her brows together and looking into Sameera’s face, Sunanda asked her.

“Of course it is.” there came a charming smile onto the lips of Sameera and she looked into the face of Aravind. Aravind also smiled on hearing that.

“What is that? May I also know?” Arjun asked Sunanda looked into her face.

The elders three looked into each other’s faces with smiles. “It is something that you cannot understand.” Sunanda said.

“How can you say that I cannot understand? First let me know and then we shall see whether I can understand that or not.”

“What should I say to this devil!” Sunanda nodded her head helplessly.

“I am thinking that the snake I am often seeing may come at any moment into this room also.” Before Arjun directing any questioning towards her, Sameera said. “If you both sit still you can see it for sure.”

“Every time you have been just imagining that snake. No one else except you could see it.” Madhuri said angrily. “We also cannot see any snake when we entered into that room.”

“You people became too late to come there. It ran away from that place by then.” Sameera said.

“I am sure that it comes here again. You both are here itself, you can see it without fail if you both shut your mouths, make your eyes wide and sit still.” Before Madhuri said anything more, Sameera said.

It did convince neither Arjun nor Madhuri but they remained silent sitting straight.

“It seems that you both have changed your offspring. My son is with you and your daughter is with my wife.” Aravind said.

“Even in torture also we want some change Aravind. So we did it like that.” Sunanda smiled and said.

“Where is Anand and what he is doing now?” Aravind asked.

“He is with his father in law and both of them have been in some chitchatting by the time we start to come here.” Sunanda said.

“I think we are going to open the doors of the next room in the evening of this day.” Sunanda said.

“There is one hour or so time to become evening.” Sameera said. “We have to see whether my dad stands on his promise or change his mind.”

“Anyhow I am thinking it is very important to perform last rites of the dead bodies if there are any in that room.” Aravind said.

“I am also of the same opinion. I think you never say anything without reason.” Sunanda said.

Sameera was about to say something then there was an earsplitting thunderclap quite nearby once again followed by heavy downpour. They stopped talking anything as they could not hear each other’s voices at that time in that heavy sound of downpour.

“Now we are going to open that room” Rajesh said. “How many of you do come with me?” he looked into the faces of the people there.

“Everyone of us do come with you.” Vinod said. “We are all very much interested in seeing what is in that room.”

“But we don’t know what it is in it.” Sunanada said “I just don’t know whether to come and see into that room or not.”

“Anyhow there is no compulsion to anyone to come and look into that room.” Rajesh said. “Whoever may feel fear may stay downstairs”

Except the sound of the drizzle and occasional small thundering of the sky there were no other sounds at that time.

“I do come and see what is in that room.” Breaking that silence Sunanda said. “I have decided not to feel fear to anything.”

“I too. I too don’t want to feel fear and see what is in it. I am feeling too much thrill as the secret of seventy years or so is going to be revealed like that.” Anand said

“What about you two? Do you also come and see when we open the doors of that room.” Looking into the faces of Neeraja and Rose, Tanuja asked with a smile.

“Not just my mom and aunt, I also come and see what is in that room.” Emily said.

“But do you know what we are expecting to see in that room? Two dead bodies! We just don’t know in which condition those dead bodies are now.” Sameera said with a serious expression in her face.

“No problem, I also just want some different time pass.” Emily said with firmness.

“Once my daughter herself is courageous like that, how can I say a ‘no’ to it.” with a smile on her lips Rose said.

“Count me in.” Neeraja said.

“For what else we need to think now dad? We all do go there along with Arjun and Madhuri also and look what is in it.” Sameera said.

“And we are going to find that black snake also in that room.” Arjun said.

“How can you say that snake is there?” Madhuri asked him.

“I don’t know. I am just feeling like that.” Arjun said. “If there is a snake and it cannot be found anywhere else in the house, where it would be then?”

“It can be anywhere outside of the house” Madhuri said.

“No, it is in the upstairs last room. I am feeling quite strongly so.” Arjun said.

“The problem. We did not think about it till now. I don’t have the key of this lock.” Rajesh said.

“How can you have it? It has been locked a long time back by your grandmother. It is surprising that we did not think about it.” hissing out heavily Vinod said.

“But see it.” Anand went near to that lock and took it into his hands. “It is rusted a lot. If we beat it with some big rock or rod it will be opened.”

“What you have said is true.” Looking at that lock Aravind said. “I go and see for some rod like thing.” He turned back and went away from that place.

“You need not go all alone. I also come with you to find that.” Anand also went after Aravind.

“I don’t know how long these both do take to find something suitable to open this lock. Is it is not better that we do wait in the middle room until they come?” Sunanda said.

“Best idea!” Sameera said and walked towards that room

Vinod, Rajesh, Neeraja and Tanuja were settled in the chairs in that room while the others settled on the bed there and started talking in themselves.

“We found this crowbar in the kitchen” in fifteen minutes or so Aravind came there with a crowbar and said.

“I saw it in the kitchen and forgot about it.” Rajesh said.

“It may be inconvenient to use this crowbar to open that lock but we could not find anything else except this.” Anand said.

“Inconvenient but not impossible. Come, we open that lock with this crowbar” Rajesh got off from the chair he sat and said. “I think I am the best person to open that lock. Give this crowbar to me.” Then he took the crow bar from the hands of Anand.

“Really you were the best person to open that lock” when Rajesh opened that lock with two beatings with the crowbar, Sunanda said. Rajesh took away that lock from the latch and he released the latch. Then he looked into the faces of the people there. There was tension and excitement in the faces of the people there. All their hearts were with full of thrilling.

“Open that Rajesh! We cannot bear this suspense.” Looking into his face with an exciting expression Tanuja said.

“Alright.” Rajesh nodded his head and opened the both doors at once with a bang.

“My god! Not just the dead bodies, there is nothing in this room! All empty!”

Sameera yelled as soon as she entered into that room and found it so. Others also were saying the same thing again and again.

“There is no snake either in this room. How did you say it like that?” Madhuri asked Arjun angrily.

“How did it stay here as we all entered into it with such a bang?” Arjun said.

“We did not see its going away either.” Madhuri was still angry.

“I saw it going away fast.” Arjun said.

“You are lying. Ever you said something true?” Madhuri was still angry

None of the elders there were in a mood to listen what they both were talking at that time. They were all astonished too much finding that room all empty like that.

“Now it is proved beyond doubt that grandma never stored any dead bodies in this room.” Rajesh said.

“We cannot say it like that” Vinod said. “She might have changed the dead bodies from here to somewhere else. Or she herself might have performed the last rites to those dead bodies.”

“There is no sign either indicating that there were dead bodies in it at sometime in the past.” Tanuja said.

“Could not grandma make this place clean and neat like this without leaving anything indicating at one time dead bodies were here?” Sunanda asked.

“The confusion is still continuing. Even now also we are not sure whether grandma kept the dead bodies of her husband and lover in this room or not.” Hissing out heavily Vinod said.

“Anyhow we have been saved from one headache. There is no necessity to perform any last rites to any body.” Yawning heavily Rajesh said.

“You people don’t know what you did. By opening this room you disturbed their peace. They don’t remain calm now.” Emily said suddenly.

“What the bloody hell you are talking?” looking at her angrily Tanuja asked her.

“I am talking the truth. Grandma’s husband’s and lover’s spirits have been taking rest in this room. Now you people opened this room and made it impure. They cannot take rest now in this room and they don’t remain calm.” Emily said again.

“Shut up Emily. Don’t talk nonsense.” Rose angrily yelled.

Emily stopped and looked confusingly into her mother’s face.

“And don’t say that you don’t know what you have said.”
