Poverty is one of the major social issue in India. Poverty exists not only in India; it exists in every country in the world. Poverty is growing day by day in this modern society.
Before going to discuss deeply about issue, let us know what is poverty?
Poverty is state of being of person with lack of basic needs such as food, water, shelter, education and energy. If you think, the above mentioned basic needs are interlinked with each other. The basic needs are very important for a human to survive in this economic world. May you have noticed most of the people by saying that “Poor are becoming poorer and the rich are becoming richer”, such economic imbalance is due to poverty. Poverty is growing day by day in our society.
I would like to bring to your attention regarding few surveys done by recognized organizations.
According to GHI (Global Hunger Index):
India has stepped down to 101st position in the Global Hunger Index (GHI)-2021 of 116 countries, from its 2020 position of 94th.
According to OXFAM:
India's top 1% of the population now holds 73% of the wealth, while 670 million citizens, comprising the country's poorest half.
According to Global MPI (Multidimensional poverty index)-2021:
India is in 66th place out of 109 countries.
According to FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization)
As per recent records, “At least 435 million people are seriously undernourished in the world today”.
The above mentioned studies clearly say that poverty is increasing rapidly in whole world and its worse impact on health of people. Now we are living in independent country, we got independence 74 years ago but still most our India citizens are dying from hunger and malnutrition. Millions of children are suffering from malnutrition. Millions are families are living in below poverty line.
“Why poverty is increasing day by day?”, few causes of Poverty in India are Explosion of population, Lack of guidance which leads to inefficient source of utilisation, unemployment and underemployment, low agricultural productivity etc. Poverty can lead people to commit crime, theft, robbery or other violent acts for earning money. In this way poverty will become barrier for smooth functioning of lives and community development.
To overcome the evil called poverty, people need proper healthcare, education and job opportunities. Health, education and job opportunities are interlinked with each other. One of the most important key to rise above the poverty is to make people aware about available resources they can utilize around them. So that they can fight with the evil called poverty. We should not blame only the government which is failing to reach the rural villages with their schemes launched for the development of citizens, there is so many ways to fight against poverty if we join our hands together for a good cause.
Few of the solutions are establishing NGO’s, conducting base camp’s or public meetings to make awareness programmes in rural villages or bring to the notice to government regarding social issues in their community by using various social media available currently.
One of the famous quote said by “Mahatma Gandhi” is “If you want to change the world, start with yourself”. Initiation is very important, if you start world will walk along your path you lead. One more related quote from “silver mist” is “Initiation is important, no matter how small it is.”
I would like to emphasize that “Change your perspective, instead of taking the word called “Help”, try to view the needy people as people to love and respect. Try to share your knowledge and make them aware regarding the sources around them. As a citizen we are accountable for the nation progress. And it is the responsibility of every citizen to participate in the nation development.
*Thanks for reading my thoughts...! *
