प्राथमिक विद्यालय का प्रांगण कोलाहल से भरा हुआ था। आज स्कूल का अंतिम दिन था, कल से गर्मी की छुट्टियाँ शुरू होने वाली थीं। बच्चे आज कुछ ज़्यादा ही उत्साहित थे। कोई मैदान में दौड़ रहा था, कोई झूले पर चढ़ा था, तो कोई अगले डेढ़ महीने की योजनाएँ दोस्तों को बता रहा था। स्कूल न आने की खुशी उनके चेहरों पर साफ़ झलक रही थी।विद्यालय की नई प्रधानाचार्या जया मैडम अपने कार्यालय में खड़ी खिड़की से यह सब देख रही थीं। इसी साल उनकी नियुक्ति हुई थी, इसलिए अभी बहुत-से बच्चों के नाम और उनकी कहानियाँ उनसे अनजान थीं।
