12 Famous Bollywood Love Stories

“Not all love stories have happy ending”, this is what our beloved Bollywood has taught us over the years and Bollywood itself is not untouched about its own theory as well. The actors and actresses work to gather day and night and there is bound to be some interaction between them and then there is an attraction and friendship and at the end of the day, love. If a pair of a hero and heroine gives a blockbuster at their very first attempt, then producers start to queue up on their doorsteps to repeat them in their movie as well. Hence there are more chances of meetings and interaction and this is how love starts to get its roots stronger. But then there are certain circumstances when despite being calling themselves ‘open minded’ and ‘unorthodox’ than the rest of the society, our Bollywood love birds cannot live together forever. Maybe their parents don’t like their relation, or sometimes they feel they do not fit each other after being together for a while, sometimes even an ego of either parties or even one party or both can be the reason to call it a day or if nothing has worked then a third party’s entry into their relationship may also become the reason for their breakup.

Today we are going to read about 12 most famous Bollywood love stories, which have kept not only the stars but also the fans interested. There had been folklores published about them in trade magazines and in various parts of media every day, but the ultimately the couple couldn’t met forever. Such stories exist since the very beginning years of Bollywood and big names and stars are involved in it. I am sure these stories will interest you. So let’s start the journey of love.

Raj Kapoor – Nargis

This was probably the most told love stories of Bollywood. At one side there was a greatest showman of Bollywood, Raj Kapoor and on the other side there was one of the most talented actresses of that period, Nargis. They created one of the first ‘romantic jodis’ of Bollywood which was loved by the fans. The pair worked to gather in not less than 16 films! ‘Aah’, ‘Aag’, ‘Awaara’ and ‘Shree 420’ are some of the prominent movies where Raj Kapoor and Nargis worked together. But the problem was that Raj Kapoor was a married man, he was married to Krishna, the sister of actor Prem Nath. He had children too. Both Raj Kapoor and Nargis were in deep love for sure but Raj Kapoor couldn’t leave his family and kids neither he could leave Nargis. It is also told that Raj Kapoor’s father and known actor Prithviraj Kapoor too gave few words of advice to Raj Kapoor on this. Raj Kapoor’s wife, Krishna one day even threatened to leave the home with her kids if Raj doesn’t leave Nargis. But yet Raj Kapoor was in continuous dilemma and was not been able to take any decision on this.

The indecision of Raj Kapoor continued for many years but finally it took a tall and they had to fell apart. Raj Kapoor went back to his family and Nargis found a new love in budding actor at that time, Sunil Dutt, who saved her life during a shoot of ‘Mother India’. Ironically Sunil Dutt was playing Nargis’ son’s role in that movie. There is no further information on whether Raj and Nargis met again in any film party or other occasion, hence this love story died down forever.

Dilip Kumar – Madhubala

This was the classic case of ‘ego damaging the love’. Dilip Kumar and Madhubala worked together in quit a number of movies and their closeness then turned in to love. Madhubala’s father Ata Ulla Khan was very possessive about his daughter and also used to make all the professional and financial decisions for his daughter as well. BR Chopra the famous producer/director was planning ‘Naya Daur’ and he went to Ata Ulla Khan to sign Madhubala against Dilip Kumar. But Khan refused Chopra’s offer as he didn’t want them to be on same set again. Chopra then requested Dilip Kumar to go and request Khan. Dilip Kumar did go there but on certain point he fought with Khan and came back empty handed. The fight was not taken well by Madhubala. Later when Dilip Kumar proposed Madhubala for marriage, Madhubala put forwarded a condition, that is, Dilip sa’ab must apologize to Ata Ulla Khan, her father first for his rude behavior that day end then only she is ready to marry. The ego struck Dilip Kumar as well and he not only refused to budge but also married Saira Bano, who was 22 years younger than him! This action of Dilip Kumar broke Madhubala, who was already suffering from serious illness, into pieces. She then married to legendary singer, actor Kishore Kumar to find some solace.

Dev Anand – Suraiya

When Dev Anand entered Bollywood Suraiya was already a big star of that era. She was known not only for her looks and acting but also for her silken voice. As a matter of fact when Dev Anand met Suraiya for the first time he was just in his teens. Dev Anand ‘s family was affected by the partition of India and was doing a job in Mumbai’s post office. But he always had a liking for acting. Hence Dev Anand was also doing a struggle in the Bollywood and he met Suraiya on one such day. Love knows no boundaries and age difference certainly doesn’t came in between. Both youngsters fell in love with each other soon. Both were young, extremely talented and also good looking hence falling in love with each other was imminent. But their love story too had a sad ending to say the least.

Because their religions were different Suraiya’s grandmother, who used to have a larger say in her decisions regarding her life, was not in favor of they both getting marry. Suraiya’s grandmother even put a curfew on her so that she can’t meet Dev Anand. Her grandmother also used to go with her for shootings as well. Dev Anand used to spend nights just at the doorstep of Suraiya’s bungalow at Mumbai’s posh Marine Drive area just to have her glimpse but Suraiya could never come out of her home and meet Dev Anand because of the pressure put on by her grandmother. Finally they had to break their relationship. Suraiya kept mum while Dev Anand was the one who had to release his frustration and he called Suraiya ‘coward’ in one of his interviews later. Maybe Dev Anand loved Suraiya more than anyone else in the world. But Suraiya kept a dignified silence till she broke it years after in an interview given to the Stardust magazine. She remembered many moments of her love story with Dev Anand and recalled that Dev always used to tell her that there is only one religion in this world and that is love. He even used to tell her that she must not allow the family and social barriers influence on her decision. But as Suraiya admitted that she couldn’t let that happen and she then regretted her decision not to marry Dev Anand.

Suraiya never married till her death, while Dev Anand later married with his co-actor Kalpana Kartik.

Guru Dutt – Waheeda Rehman

Waheeda Rehman was Guru Dutt’s find. He introduced Waheeda in one of the classics of all time, ‘CID’. Waheeda Rehman became instant favorite of Guru Dutt not only on screen but off the screen as well. To remain with his love again and again, Guru Dutt casted Waheeda Rehman in many more movies like ‘Pyaasa’, ‘Chaudhvin Ka Chand’, Kagaz Ke Phoor’ and Saheb Biwi Aur Ghulam’ as well. There was no specific reason on why this love story couldn’t go along and ended to its logical end. But life of Guru Dutt was lost for sure. Guru Dutt was already married to the famous singer Geeta Dutt and was having kids. Probably that was the main reason for him not to make a firm decision and later falling in to a depression and attempted a suicide. There was another talk of Waheeda was forcing Guru Dutt to accept Islam first then only she was ready to marry him and Guru Dutt was not agreeing to do that. Whatever the reason maybe we lost a classic director at very young age due to personal failure in love. On 10th October 1964 at an age of just 39 Guru Dutt found dead in his bedroom with mixture of sleeping pill overdose and alcohol.

Sanjeev Kumar – Hema Malini

Generally love stories are created by two different people, but there are few love stories too where there is a feeling but only one sided. Sanjeev Kumar used to share such feelings for his co-actor Hema Malini. After working with Hema Malini in few movies, Sanjeev Kumar fell in love with her. Not only that he even managed to propose Hema Malini on the sets of one of their movies. But to Sanjeev Kumar’s surprise Hema Malini promptly rejected Sanjeev Kumar’s proposal. Sanjeev Kumar obviously was sad but later he got shock of his life when Hema Malini married to another Bollywood star Dharmendra who was already married.

Sanjeev Kumar and Hema Malini later came together in few movies too but deep in his heart ‘Haribhai’ still loved her and probably that was the reason why he never married. People say that after Hema’s rejection only Sanjeev Kumar started to drink alcohol without having any control over it. This lead to a series of heart attacks later in his life and became reason for his untimely and early death. But these are only stories which we may not be able to believe. But one thing is sure that whether it is one sided feeling or two sided when your love is rejected you will never forget your love and you keep on thinking about it 24x7. There are persons who can swallow this bitter pill but then they always remember their love. Sanjeev Kumar, unfortunately couldn’t do either and hence succumbed to an early death which he never deserved. Bollywood lost an ultimate actor in Sanjeev Kumar for sure.

Amitabh Bachchan – Rekha

This is probably one of the most told, most celebrated and most confusing love stories of all time. It is open secrete to say the list. The relationship started with mutual admiration on the sets of ‘Ganga Ki Saugandh’ when a co-actor misbehaved with Rekha and an angry Amitabh shown that actor his place. The love started to brew on the sets on ‘Do Anjaane’ and later it was told that both Amitabh and Rekha used to meet at a bungalow of Rekha’s close friend very often. Obviously Amitabh was married and having kids was a problem to go on full throttle, but this couple never spoke any word in public about their relationship. Wife of Amitabh, Jaya, is said to have invited Rekha for a dinner and asked her candidly about the relation. The rumor mill started working overtime when Rekha appeared with a sindoor and mangalsutra during the wedding of Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh. Amitabh Bachchan was in same dilemma what Raj Kapoor and Guru Dutt were; he didn’t want to leave his family for his love. Later Amitabh, Jaya and Rekha worked together in Yash Chopra’s ‘Silsila’ where the real life story was enacted as a reel life story.

Actually Parveen Babi and Smita Patil were casted for the roles of Rekha and Jaya Bachchan. But on the insistence of director Yash Chopra, Amitabh Bachchan first convinced both Rekha and Jaya to work in the movie and then had to say sorry to both Parveen and Smita. Smita Patil later did few movies with Amitabh but Parveen could not forgive Amitabh as she thought that Amitabh conspired against her to bring Rekha in her place. Since that movie the relation between Amitabh and Rekha took downward step and Amitabh’s life threatening accident at the sets of ‘Coolie’ made it sure that it ends fully as both Amitabh and Jaya bonded excellently during former’s long time treatment.

Sanjay Dutt – Madhuri Dixit

Sanjay Dutt was married to Richa Sharma, an actress and had a daughter named Trisha. But Richa Sharma died due to cancer at a very young age. Sanjay Dutt, obviously was devastated due to this . He wanted some solace and found the same in Madhuri Dixit at the sets of ‘Saajan’ where they were playing love buds. Their love story went on and became stronger as they started to do more and more movies together like ‘Thanedaar’ and ‘Khalnayak’. But Sanjay Dutt’s image of bad boy did not go well with Madhuri’s family, especially her father. He always used to oppose and criticize this relationship. Later Sanjay Dutt was arrested by the Mumbai Police for illegally keeping arms, during the horrible 1992 Mumbai Blasts, at his home under the stringent law of TADA. Madhuri’s father did not have to say anything more and the relationship was ended then and there only.

Salman Khan – Aishwarya Rai

Salman Khan’s name always used to get attached with almost all of his co-stars starting from his first blockbuster movie, Maine Pyar Kiya’s heroine Bhagyashree. But he got really serious with Aishwarya Rai, the former Miss World beauty pageant winner turned actress on the sets of ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’. They both went along together for few months until Salman started doubting Aishwarya on her relationships with each of her co-stars. Later he even became physical with Ash and she has to put a full stop on the relationship. This did not stop Salman and end of the relationship made him go even wilder. Ash left ‘Chori Chori Chupke Chupke’ and Rani Mukherjee replaced her because of Salman’s unwanted behavior on the sets. Salman then started to go on the sets of the movies where he was not at all part of it but Aishwarya was and used to mock her and fight with her without any provocation. Slowly he toned down and everything became normal, but it was way too late for him. He already had lost Aishwarya. After having another relationship with Viveik Oberoi, Aishwarya finally got settled by marrying Abhishek Bachchan and the couple is having a very happy married life and Salman Khan is still lonely.

Akshay Kumar – Shilpa Shetty

Akshay Kumar was having a great run to his career when he met Shilpa Shetty on the sets of ‘Mein Khiladi Tu Anari’. They immediately gelled together and fell in love. But Akshay Kumar was known for his flirty nature and later Shilpa too experienced the same. Even when both were in the relationship, Akshay’s name was linked with his co-actresses like Raveena Tondon, Mamta Kulkarni and Pooja Batra. But Shilpa couldn’t bear the pain when Akshay Kumar’s name was linked with her best friend then, Twinkle Khanna, daughter of Dimple Kapadiya and Rajesh Khanna. Shilpa Shetty found Akshay and Twinkle’s act as cheating on her and she decided to get out of this relationship. Later Akshay got married with Twinkle and Shilpa Shetty got married with UK based NRI businessman Raj Kundra. Both of them are now having a happy and settled life.

Abhishek Bachchan – Karisma Kapoor

This is probably the saddest love story among all these twelve stories we are learning about, to say the least. Abhishek Bachchan made his debut with Karisma’s younger sister Kareena in ‘Refugee’. On sets of the film Abhishek and Karisma used to meet often and later they fell in love with each other. Two of the top Bollywood families, the Kapoors and the Bachchans were to tie their relationship soon. Both Abhishek and Karisma got engaged too in a lavish party on the occasion of Amitabh Bachchan’s 60th birthday at a plush hotel in Mumbai’s suburb. But suddenly things started to change. The Bachchans were not for Karisma to continue working in the movies after the marriage, which made Karisma’s mother Babita go furious. Years back Babita herself left Randhir Kapoor on the same issue after their marriage and birth of two daughters. There is one more story related to this as well. According to this story, Amitabh Bachchan’s then close friend and politician Amarsingh had planted spies behind Karisma to find whether she has another relationship or not. This reason too was enough to make Babita angry. Whatever the reason maybe a perfect looking Jodi was broken forever. Interestingly Abhishek’s elder sister Shweta has married to Karisma’s cousin only.

Shahid Kapoor – Kareena Kapoor

Just like her elder sister Karisma, Kareena Kapoor too suffered heartbreak in her life. She was in deep love with Shahid Kapoor. But somehow they could not manage to continue the relation after everything was looking rosy. The couple even gave one of the biggest hits in Bollywood, ‘Jab We Met’. There are two different sets of stories which made rounds during those days. One thing was common though in both of the stories that there was a severe miscommunication between the two which lead for the breakup. As per Kareena’s version she tried her best to keep the relation going for not less than three months, but Shahid was not answering her attempts. As per Shahid’s explanations there was nothing outside which broke the relation, it something which happened within which forced them to fell apart. Kareena Kapoor later married to actor Saif Ali Khan and just recently Shahid Kapoor too married to Mira Rajput.

John Abraham – Bipasha Basu

They were considered to be hottest couple of Bollywood for a long period of time. Both met at the sets of ‘Jism’ and love started to brew. The bonding got stronger and stronger by the day. They decided not to get marry but to be in live-in relationship. It was the first of that kind in Bollywood and first time any famous couple declared in public that they are into a live-in. They even lived together for many years and suddenly the gloss was started to fade and one day the news broke that the relation has ended. When John Abraham later, got married with Priya Runchal, a banker from New York, Bipasha congratulated John on Twitter as well. John is having a good healthy married life but Bipasha after having affair with few of the actors are yet to get committed with any.
