The title" Mahatma" awarded to Gandhiji
Rendering to some authors, Rabindranath Tagore is said to have used this designation for Gandhi on March 6, 1915.
The word “Bapu” refers to “Father”. Gandhi is also known as “Mahatma” and “Father of the Nation”. The title “Mahatma” was awarded to him by Rabindranath Tagore. Addressed as “Netaji”, he is one of the greatest freedom fighters in Indian history.
British government gave title Kaiser-e-Hind to Gandhiji.
The title given by the British Government to Mahatma Gandhi was Kaiser-e-Hind which he surrendered during the Non-Cooperation movement . Secretary, General administration department of British government circulated a memorandum in 1938 to concerned departments that Mr. Gandhi should be referred to as Mahatma Gandhi in all the government correspondence. It seems British government accepted the feeling of Indians and referred Bapu as" Mahatma".
