ગુજરાતના એક નાના ગામમાં “હિરસી તળાવ” નામનું એક ખૂણું હતું. તળાવના કિનારે એક જૂની હવેલી પડેલી હતી, જેને ગામવાળા “રક્તવાડી” તરીકે ઓળખતા. કહેવામાં આવતું કે તે હવેલીમાં વર્ષો પહેલા રાણી ઉમાબાઈ રહેતી હતી, જેને ત્રાસદાયક રીતે કીધા વગર ગાધવામાં આવી હતી. ત્યારથી દર પૂર્ણિમાની રાત્રે ત્યાંથી રડવાની, હસવાની અને બેચેન આત્માની ચીસો સાંભળાઈ આવે છે. ગામના લોકો સાંજ બાદ તળાવ પાસે પણ જવાનું ટાળતા. પણ નાની ઉમરના એક ઉત્સાહી યુવાન "મહેશ" ને ભૂતોની વાતમાં ખાસ વિશ્વાસ નહોતો. એનો મિત્ર રાજુ કહેતો, "મહેશ, પૂનમની રાતે એ હવેલીમાં જઈશ તો પાછો નહીં આવો!" મહેશે ચેલેન્જ સ્વીકારી. “પૂનમ આવી રહી છે, હું જઈશ એ રાતે હવેલીમાં એક આખી રાત રહેવા!” એણે સાથે એક ટોર્ચ, પાણીની બોટલ અને મોટે લોખંડનો દરવાજો ખોલવાનો હથોડો લઈને રવાના થયો. રાતના 12 વાગે હવેલીમાં પગ મૂકતાં જ ટાઢી હવામાં એક અજીબ ગંધ આવવા લાગી. દરવાજા જૂના હતા, ચીક ચીક અવાજ કરતા ખૂલે. અંદર દડકો પડેલો, ધૂળથી ભરેલો હોલ હતો. મહેશે ટોર્ચ ચાલુ કરી આસપાસ જોવા લાગ્યો. અચાનક એક ખૂણામાં સફેદ સાડીમાં એક સ્ત્રી દેખાઈ! “કોણ છે તું?” મહેશે પ્રશ્ન કર્યો, પણ જવાબ મળ્યો નહીં. સ્ત્રી ધીરે ધીરે પાછળ તરફ ગઈ અને એકદમ અદૃશ્ય થઈ ગઈ. મહેશને લાગ્યું કે એનો ભ્રમ છે. પણ પછી તળાવ તરફ એક બાળકીના હસવાની અવાજ સાંભળાઈ. મહેશે ખિસ્સામાંથી ટોર્ચ કાઢી નીચે ગયો. પાણી પાસે એક છોકરી બેઠી હતી, તે કહે, “અંકલ, તમે પણ એ સાથે ફસાઈ ગયા?” “એ કોણ?” મહેશે ધબકતા હૃદયથી પૂછ્યું. “રાણી ઉમાબાઈ... એને શાંતી નથી મળી... હવે તમે પાછા જઈ ન શકો!” એટલામાં પછાડી તરફથી પગલાંના અવાજ આવ્યા. મહેશે પાછું ફરી જોયું – પણ ત્યાં કોઈ નહોતું. બાળકી અચાનક ગાયબ થઈ ગઈ. અને હવે એ દરવાજો પણ બંધ થઈ ગયો... અંદરથી! બીજી સવારે ગામવાળાઓએ મહેશને શોધવાની કોશિશ કરી – પણ એ ક્યાંય મળ્યો નહીં. હવેલીની અંદરથી માત્ર એક કાગળ મળ્યો જેમાં લખેલું હતું: "હવે હું પણ ઉમાબાઈ સાથે છું..." ત્યાંથી આજ સુધી, કોઈ પણ વ્યક્તિ “હિરસી તળાવ”ની હવેલી તરફ નહિ જાય. અને જ્યારે પણ પૂનમ આવે છે – રાત્રે એક નવો અવાજ હવેલીમાંથી બોલે છે – "આવો... તમારા માટે રાહ જોઈ રહી છું..."
