પ્રેમની શરૂઆત વ્યક્તિત્વથી થાય છે. કોઈની આંખો ગમે, લાંબા વાળ ગમે, તે સુંદર લાગે, તેની દેહાકૃતિ ગમે, બોલવાની છટા ગમે, સ્મિત ગમે... આ બધાં વ્યક્તિત્વદર્શી આયામો થયા. પ્રેમમાં પડવા માટે વ્યક્તિમાં કંઈક ગમવું ખૂબ જરૂરી છે. વ્યક્તિના બાહ્ય દેખાવને લગતી બાબતો અથવા ઘણી વખતે વ્યક્તિની સ્વભાવગત આદતો કે જેના લીધે વ્યક્તિ ગમવા લાગે અને તેના વ્યક્તિત્વ સાથે પ્રેમ અનુભવાય. ત્યાર બાદ ધીમે ધીમે એક તબક્કો એવો આવે છે કે જ્યારે વ્યક્તિના અસ્તિત્વ સાથે પ્રેમ થઈ જાય છે. આ તબક્કે વ્યક્તિત્વ બહુ અગત્યનું રહેતું નથી. વ્યક્તિમાં બદલાવ આવે તો પણ પ્રેમમાં બદલાવ આવતો નથી. વ્યક્તિનાં અમુક નબળાં-સબળાં પાસાઓ જે કદી ધ્યાને જ ન આવ્યા હોય તે પણ સામે આવે. છતાં વ્યક્તિ પ્રત્યેનો પ્રેમ જેમનો તેમ રહે છે. કારણ... પ્રેમ વ્યક્તિના વ્યક્તિત્વ સાથે નહિ તેના અસ્તિત્વ સાથે છે.
