शाम ढल चुकी थी। शहर की वो फैक्ट्री, जहाँ से रामू रोज़ की रोटी-कपड़ा कमा रहा था, अब ताले में जकड़ी खड़ी थी। धूल से ढकी मशीनें, जैसे किसी ने अचानक उनकी सांसें खींच ली हों। रामू ने अपने झोले को कंधे पर डाला और धीरे-धीरे अपने कमरे की तरफ बढ़ा। उसके पैर भारी थे, लेकिन दिल उससे भी ज्यादा। मन ही मन सोचता रहा—“अगर फैक्ट्री ही बंद हो गई, तो हम जिएँगे कैसे? किराया कैसे देंगे? बच्चे को खिलाएँगे क्या?”
