PREFACE
This is the second pocket edition of the Constitution of India in the diglot form. In this edition, the text of the Constitution of India has been brought up-to-date by incorporating therein all the amendments up to and including the Constitution (Ninety- second Amendment) Act, 2003.
2. The Constitution applies to the State of Jammu and Kashmir with certainexceptions and modifications as provided in article 370 and the Constitution (Application to Jammu and Kashmir) Order, 1954. This Order has been included in Appendix I for facility of reference. Appendix II contains a restatement of the exceptions and modifications. Appendix III relates to extracts from the Constitution (Forty-fourth Amendment) Act, 1978. The text of the constitutional amendments relating to the Constitution (Eighty-sixth Amendment) Act, 2002 and the Constitution (Eighty-eighth Amendment) Act, 2002, which have not come in force, have been provided in Appendix IV and Appendix V.

THE CONSTITUTION OF INDIA
PREAMBLE
WE, THE PEOPLE OF INDIA, having solemnly resolved to constitute India
into a SOVEREIGN SOCIALIST SECULAR DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC and to
secure to all its citizens:
JUSTICE, social, economic and political;
LIBERTY of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship;
EQUALITY of status and of opportunity;
and to promote among them all
FRATERNITY assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and
integrity of the Nation;
IN OUR CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY this twenty-sixth day of November, 1949, do HEREBY ADOPT, ENACT AND GIVE TO OURSELVES THIS CONSTITUTION.
