Yes, We Can

Yes, We can

“Men should be taught to be practical, physically strong. A dozen such lions will conquer the world, not millions of sheep.”

- Swami Vivekananda

This is the positive attitude towards life and its struggles. Life without a positive attitude is like a ship without a sail. Take the example of ice-berg phenomenon. If you see an ice-berg closely, it appears only ten percent outside water. Remaining ninety percent of ice-berg is hidden inside ocean water. This is the reality of men. We all have potential and we all are blessed with abilities. The only factor that we lack is positive attitude. Yes, we can is all and all about this attitude and our willingness to change ourselves.

“If You can’t fly, then run

If You can’t run, then walk

If you can’t walk, then crawl

But whatever you do,

You have to keep moving foreword”

- Martin Luther king Jr.

‘Yes, we can’ is all about our lives. You might have heard the proverb ‘A silent sea has never made an expert sailor’. The proverb is quite justified. When we are talking about an expert sailor, the obvious question arises in our mind “What is the difference between an ordinary sailor and an expert sailor?”

The answer may be quite simple – An expert sailor has lot of experience. Then again a question arises “How did he get those experiences to make him an expert?” The answer again is quite simple experience comes from bad experiences. Thus, one thing is quite clear that expertise comes from experiences and experiences comes bad experiences of the past. So, the expert sailor may have definitely faced lot of hardships and struggles in his life which made him an expert sailor.

“With our thoughts,

We make our world”

- Buddha

People always talk about Positive Attitude and Positive thing and the power of positive thinking. They preach everybody to be positive in life and when it comes to practice, they start complaining that “This is impossible”. Here, I would like to highlight that start yourself. Start positive actions by yourself. When you are offered challenges, accept them. When you are tested, face the problems. Take the example of our life. You can easily compare life with a kite. A kite is a symbol of freedom, self confidence and human aspirations. When a person is young, he dreams to travel high up and to achieve his goals. When he grows up, he finds competitions everywhere like a kite which is in the sky and other kites are ready to cut throat. This is harsh reality of life. So, let’s face it. When you are in a dilemma just speak out “Yes, we can” and I am sure you will.

“When I asked God for strength,
He showed me some unhappy people.
When I asked God for wealth,
He showed me ways to work hard.
When I asked God for favours,
He showed me opportunities to work hard.
When I asked God for peace,
He showed me how to help others.
God gave me nothing I wanted,
He gave me everything I needed."
- Swami Vivekananda

This is one of the immortal compositions of Swami Vivekananda. The message is quite clear; the God will always offer us what we need. So, our father the great Lord, Himself is testing and we have to follow the maxim “Yes, we can”. No matter what is the task and no matter how big the challenge is, we just have to carry out our duties.

“Each work has to pass through these stages – ridicule, opposition and then acceptance

- Swami Vivekananda

When you think of something new or something extraordinary in our life, you will definitely pass through these stages in life. First of all people will ridicule. They will make as much fun as possible. They will insult you because you are different and because they fear “What if you do that?” Then in the second stage they will oppose you. In my life, I have met hundreds of people, who just worry “What others would think?”, “What he would say?”, “How people would react?”, “What elders would think?” Dear all, these thoughts are the biggest barriers to take the first step towards success. According to my opinion, the biggest sin is to think, “What people would say?” Just ignore it. Take the first step when your soul feels to take the first step. Just, don’t care about those things. The truth of life is that the people fail without doing anything, those who try something will always be successful in one way or other. In the third stage of your task they will accept you. They will accept all your ideas and accomplishments because of your strong willpower. Thus, the men with strong willpower will always be successful in their lives and in doing whatever they want to do.

“in all our actions, errors and mistakes are our only teachers. Who commits mistakes, the path of truth is attainable by him only. Trees never make mistakes, nor do stones fall into error; animals are hardly seen to transgress the fixed laws of nature; but man is prone to err, and it is man who becomes god-on- earth.”

- Swami Vivekananda

While taking on a new challenge or while starting a new job, business or a new thing in life, most of the men worry about mistakes. Guys don’t worry about errors and mistakes that you commit. These are the part and parcel of a constructive work. Mistakes, errors and failures are the part of learning experiences. ‘To err is human’. Don’t get upset if you make a mistake or if you face failure in initial stages. Try to learn from them and try not to repeat them. This is the best attitude towards mistakes or errors. Repeating the errors and mistakes shows carelessness and to some extent foolishness. This should be avoided by you.

TAKE THE FIRST STEP, NOW

If your mind is suggesting something and if your heart is willingly telling you to do something then start doing it now. Don’t wait for the time and don’t wait for someone else to tell you or don’t fell in arguments and don’t make excuses. If there is an inner feeling or an urge to do something, then just do it.

Don’t worry about the pros and cons. Let me give you one example. Kalpana Chawla always dreamt to fly high up in the space. She belonged to a middle class family and in those days there were no girls in Aeronautical Engineering. She faced and succeeded all the barriers that came across her way and finally she accomplished her dream to be a traveller of the galaxy. This is the secret of life – TAKE THE FIRST STEP TOWARDS YOUR GOAL.

No matter how bigger your goal is, take the first step. Many people take the first step and then start falling in doubts. “How”, “When”, “Where”, these questions always encircle their minds and they ultimately turn towards the wrong track which has no destination. When you have taken the first step, have faith in yourself and have faith in God. Your duty is just to take first step properly. I would like to share the story of Sindbad the sailor. Once, Sindbad and his crew members lost their direction in the sea. There started a struggle for life because they were travelling for many days without any destination. Soon, there was scarcity of food and water. Everybody feared death. The crew was in despair. At that time, Sindbad told everyone “Open the sails and let the ship travel in direction which the winds decide. Lord is our maker and He will decide our destiny.” Sindbad and his crew were saved and the rest is the legend.

“Have patience with all things, but chiefly have patience with yourself. Do not lose courage in considering your own imperfections, but instantly set about remedying them; every day begin the task anew.”

  • st. Francis de sales
  • Once we have taken the first step and started working on our goal, we require patience. Patience is the virtue that we have to develop. I know that most of us would complain that current era is fast and we cannot lag behind. This is a partial truth. On many occasions when we are trying something new or building a system or working for a change, we have to be patient. According to William Cowper “The bud may have a bitter taste, but sweet will be the flower. This means that the fruits of patience are really sweet. Rome wasn’t built in a day. One thing is definitely sure that everything comes to him who waits. So, have patience, the things will happen and you will definitely achieve your goals.

“Those in this world who have the courage to try and solve in their own lives new problems of life are those who raise society to greatness. Those who merely live according to rule do not advance society, they only carry it along.”

  • gandhiji
  • We have to be courageous if we are trying a new thing. We cannot sit and wait for things to happen. We have to take responsibility and face the odds. Sometimes, we have to oppose the wrong system if the system is corrupted. If the system is totally worst, you have to build a new system. This applies in jobs, business and even in our practical lives. We can’t be just spectators. Swami Vivekananda also insisted in having both physical courage and mental courage. According to swami Vivekananda “The brain and muscles must develop simultaneously. Iron nerves with an intelligent brain – and the whole world is at your feet.” Never be weak. You must be strong; you have infinite strength within you.

I want to elaborate this further, never in any condition think that you are weak and you are nobody. When someone tells about your weakness (in terms of courage), just ignore it. In no case, remember his words and never fell into arguments with him. If you fell in arguments, you are in one way accepting his ideas. The best possible way to avoid those critics and sceptics is to avoid them. Show them results and prove yourself. Falling into arguments is just a sheer waste of time. Winning or losing an argument is of no worth so don’t waste time in arguments.

“Victories that are easy are cheap. Those only are worth having which come as the result of hard fighting.”

  • Henry ward beecher
  • This means that after hard struggle, victory is sure and worthy. Your efforts and your perseverance for your goals will be definitely counted on. You will really turn out to be a winner. Your vision will be accomplished. You will be able to complete any task which looked impossible for the rest of the people.

    Conclusion

‘Yes, we can’ is a way of life. I think that we should make it a principle which can be used in our daily lives. From a little boy to an elderly person ‘Can do’ attitude should be developed in all the people. Japan was ruined in 1945 by the atom bombs of America. Lots of people were killed, there were harmful radiations everywhere. Everything was destroyed in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The economy of Japan was ruined. There was no hope for anything after such a mega disaster. Yet, Japan bounced back and became a developed nation in the world. Do you know the reason? The reason is quite clear the ‘can do’ attitude of the Japanese people. Take the example of Saurav Ganguly, the famous Indian Cricketer. When Saurav became the captain of Indian Cricket team, India had very poor record in playing away from home especially on green top pitches of England and Australia. Nobody ever dreamt of winning Test matches in England in a grand style. Saurav was a man with different thoughts and he did it. During his captaincy India won matches in such conditions where nobody thought of victory.

So, just do what you love and love what you do….and never forget “Yes, we can”………..Yes, we can win…..

Yes, we can and we will make a difference….. Yes, we can stand against the odds…… Yes, we can change the system…. Yes, we can be successful….. Yes, we can win the world…….
