When Two Roads Chose Each Other - Part 16

When Distance Starts to Speak
Not all distance is absence.
Sometimes, it is a quiet test—
of patience,
of trust,
of whether something real can exist
even when it is not constantly held.
The next evening felt different.
Aarushi reached the bus stop at the usual time.
Same place.
Same railing.
Same fading light.
But Mira wasn’t there.
She checked the time.
Right time.
She waited.
Five minutes.
Ten minutes.
Her mind didn’t panic like before.
But it noticed.
That was enough.
Her phone buzzed.
Mira:
"I might be late today."
Aarushi read it once.
Then again.
Aarushi:
"Okay."
Short reply.
Simple.
But behind it, her thoughts moved quietly—
Why does it still matter this much?
The sky slowly darkened.
People came and left.
Buses stopped, doors opened, doors closed, engines moved forward.
Aarushi stayed.
Not because she had to.
But because she wanted to.
Fifteen minutes later, Mira arrived.
Breath slightly uneven.
Hair messy from the wind.
Eyes searching.
And when she saw Aarushi—
She stopped.
Like she hadn’t expected her to still be there.
“You waited,” Mira said softly.
Aarushi shrugged. “I wasn’t in a hurry.”
It wasn’t a lie.
But it wasn’t the full truth either.
They stood side by side.
Not awkward.
But aware.
“I’m sorry,” Mira said. “Work got messy.”
“It’s okay,” Aarushi replied.
Mira looked at her carefully.
“You say that easily,” she said.
Aarushi smiled faintly. “Because I mean it.”
Mira didn’t respond immediately.
Because she knew—
sometimes ‘it’s okay’ hides a lot more than it says.
They started walking.
Slower than usual.
“Did you miss me?” Mira asked suddenly.
The question came light—almost teasing.
But her eyes weren’t.
They were serious.
Aarushi looked ahead, not at her.
“Yes,” she said.
No hesitation.
No softening.
Just truth.
Mira’s steps slowed slightly.
“Okay,” she whispered, almost to herself.
A few moments passed.
Then Aarushi spoke again.
“But I didn’t panic,” she added.
Mira turned toward her.
“That’s new,” Aarushi said quietly.
“I think I’m learning not to lose myself while waiting.”
Mira smiled—small, proud, something deeper underneath.
“That’s important,” she said.
“It is,” Aarushi nodded.
They reached their usual spot.
But instead of sitting, Mira stayed standing.
There was something on her mind.
Aarushi noticed instantly.
“What is it?” she asked.
Mira exhaled slowly.
“I got an opportunity today,” she said.
Aarushi’s chest tightened slightly.
“What kind?”
“An art residency,” Mira replied.
“Different city. Two months.”
Silence.
Not heavy.
But still.
Aarushi felt her heartbeat shift.
Not faster.
Just… different.
“That’s good,” she said softly.
Mira looked at her.
“You don’t sound convinced.”
“I am,” Aarushi replied.
“I just… didn’t expect it.”
Mira nodded.
“I didn’t either.”
The wind moved between them.
Carrying something unspoken.
“So you’ll go?” Aarushi asked.
Mira hesitated.
“I don’t know,” she said honestly.
Aarushi finally looked at her.
“You should,” she said.
Mira’s brows furrowed. “That easy?”
Aarushi smiled faintly.
“Nothing about this is easy,” she said.
“But you shouldn’t stay back because of me.”
Mira stepped closer.
“I wouldn’t stay back because of you,” she said quietly.
“But I would think twice because you exist.”
The words landed gently.
But deeply.
Aarushi looked down at her hands.
“I don’t want to become something that holds you back,” she said.
Mira shook her head immediately.
“You’re not,” she said.
“You’re the first thing that makes me want to take something seriously again.”
A pause.
“And that scares me,” Mira added.
They finally sat down.
Closer than before.
But quieter.
“What are you scared of?” Aarushi asked.
Mira looked ahead.
“That distance will change this,” she admitted.
“That two months will turn into something… less.”
Aarushi inhaled slowly.
“That depends,” she said.
“On what?” Mira asked.
“On whether we’re building something real,” Aarushi replied.
Mira turned to her.
“And are we?”
Aarushi met her gaze.
“Yes.”
No hesitation.
Mira’s fingers moved slightly on the bench between them.
Aarushi noticed.
This time, she reached first.
Her hand slipped into Mira’s.
Natural.
Steady.
Not asking.
Choosing.
“Then maybe distance won’t break it,” Aarushi said softly.
“Maybe it will show us what it actually is.”
Mira looked at their hands.
Then back at her.
“You trust this?” she asked.
Aarushi smiled gently.
“I’m learning to.”
The night settled around them slowly.
Streetlights flickered on.
Voices faded.
The world moved forward like always.
And there they sat—
Not trying to hold the moment tighter,
not trying to promise anything impossible,
just… staying.
Even with uncertainty.
Even with distance waiting ahead.
Because sometimes, love isn’t about being close all the time.
Sometimes, it’s about choosing each other—
even when space exists in between.
