Title: The "K" Chronicles
Story:
1. The year of Nokia 1100, snake game, and the most anxiety-inducing invention in teenage romance history: the 160-character SMS.
Rohit had perfected the art of the text. His thumbs moved faster than his brain, crafting emotional masterpieces that would make Kumar Sanu cry. Every morning, without fail, she would wake up to:
"Good morning my beautiful star 🌟 May your day be as bright as your smile and as sweet as you. Thinking of you always. Can't wait to see you in college. Have a amazing day! ❤️"
His thumb hovered over send. Perfect. Poetry. Love.
He pressed send.
Three minutes passed.
Five minutes.
Ten.
Then, the notification. His heart stopped.
New Message from: Priya
"K."
One letter. That's it. K.
Rohit stared at the screen. K? What did K mean? Was it a typo? Was she mad? Did she mean "OK"? Was "K" shorter than "OK" because she couldn't waste a single character on him? Did she hate him? Was their relationship over before it truly began?
His best friend, Sunil (now 25, still causing chaos), found him on the college steps, head in hands.
"Bhai, what happened? She dumped you?"
"She replied," Rohit whispered dramatically.
"Great! That's progress!"
"She said... K."
Sunil blinked. "K? As in the letter?"
"K," Rohit repeated, haunted. "What does it mean? Is she mad? Tired? Did someone die? Is she in danger? Should I call? Should I not call? Sunil, I haven't slept. I counted 1,247 sheep and each one had a 'K' on its face."
Sunil grabbed his shoulders. "Listen to me, Romeo. She replied. That's more than most guys get. 'K' is not rejection. 'K' is... neutral. 'K' is the Switzerland of responses. You're overthinking."
---
The Next Morning
Rohit tried again. Shorter this time. Casual.
"Heyyy ☀️ Hope you slept well. What's your first class? 😊"
Reply:
"K."
Rohit wanted to throw his Nokia into the river.
---
The Pattern
Days turned into weeks. The pattern never changed.
Rohit: "You looked so pretty in college today. That blue kurta is your color. Also, your laugh during lunch was like music. Just wanted you to know. Goodnight sweet dreams 💫"
Priya: "K."
Rohit: "I wrote you a poem. It's 160 characters exactly. Roses are red, violets are blue, my world is bright, because of you..."
Priya: "K."
Rohit: "Kya matlab K?! Do you even like me?! 😭"
Priya: "K."
---
The Intervention
Sunil gathered their friend group. "We need to save him. He's losing his mind over a single letter."
"It's not just a letter!" Rohit cried. "It's a void! An abyss! She types K like she's erasing me from existence!"
His friend Vikram, who had a girlfriend, laughed. "Bhai, my girl sends 'Hmm' and 'K' all the time. It's normal. They do it to torture us."
"But why?!"
"They're busy. Or their battery is low. Or they're with friends. Or they just don't feel like typing. Girls are mysterious. Accept it."
"But I pour my soul into those texts!"
"And she acknowledges it with 'K'. That's not rejection. That's efficiency. She's a woman of few words. Be grateful she's not sending '👍'."
---
The Breakthrough
One night, desperate, Rohit sent something different.
"Hey. You don't have to reply. Just... if you're happy with me, send any other letter. B. C. Anything but K."
Three minutes later:
"❤️"
Rohit screamed. His mother ran in. "Beta, what happened?!"
"Nothing, Maa! Just... love!"
She sighed. "These SMS love stories will kill you. At least in my time, we had landlines and fathers who scared boys properly."
---
The Truth
Eventually, Rohit gathered courage and asked directly:
"Why do you only send K?"
Priya: "Because my phone keypad is broken. The 5 and 6 buttons don't work. Only letters I can type are K, L, M, N, O. And O feels too enthusiastic. K is safe."
Rohit: "FOR THREE MONTHS?!"
Priya: "I didn't want to tell you. Felt embarrassing. Also, your long messages are cute. I save them. I have 47 in my inbox."
Rohit stared at his Nokia. Then laughed until he cried.
The next day, he bought her a new phone.
She replied: "Thank you ❤️"
And he learned that sometimes, the smallest reply hides the biggest heart.
