MOON AND SILVER - 2

The howl did not fade from Kael Blackthorne’s mind.

It carved itself into him.

He stood at the edge of Shadowpine territory long after the sound dissolved into the night air.

The pack grounds behind him buzzed with confusion warriors whispering, elders demanding explanations, Selene pretending concern.

But Kael heard none of it.

Because that was not an ordinary wolf’s howl.

It was dominance.

Ancient.

Claiming.

His wolf paced violently beneath his skin.
Find her.

Kael clenched his jaw.

“No,” he muttered under his breath.

He had made his decision.

Publicly.

Clearly.

Strategically.

Ayla Ravenwood was not fit to stand beside him as Luna.

And yet

The bond scar in his chest burned like fresh fire.

Another pulse of silver energy rippled faintly through the air.

He felt it.

Not with senses.

With instinct.

She is in Veilwood.

Kael turned sharply toward the dark forest bordering the territory.

Veilwood was forbidden after sundown.

Too many disappearances.

Too much unexplained activity.

Elders claimed ancient wolves roamed its depths.

He never believed in legends.

Until tonight.

Without informing anyone, Kael stepped across the border.

The moment his boot touched Veilwood soil, the temperature shifted.

Colder.

Thicker.

The trees loomed taller here, branches twisting unnaturally as if reaching downward instead of upward.

Kael inhaled.

Her scent lingered.

Not weak.

Not faint.

Stronger than he remembered.
Moonlight.

And something darker beneath it.
He shifted.

Bones cracked smoothly into place, muscles expanding as midnight-black fur spread across his body. His silver eyes gleamed in the forest shadows.

His wolf moved forward silently.

Predatory.

Tracking.

Every snapped twig, every displaced leaf told a story.

She had not run aimlessly.

She had staggered.

Then steadied.

Then—
The earth here was cracked.

Trees bore deep claw marks.

Not ordinary.

Too large.

Kael froze.

His wolf’s ears flattened.

Impossible.

Ayla’s wolf had always been small compared to ranked wolves. Slower in training drills. Less aggressive in combat.

But these marks

They were carved high into thick bark.

Higher than his shoulder.

His breathing deepened.

“She couldn’t have…”

A faint silver glow pulsed between the trees ahead.

Kael’s heart thudded once.

Twice.

He moved toward it carefully.

And then he saw her.

Ayla stood in the clearing, human again, but something about her posture had changed.

She was not trembling.

She was not crying.

She stood barefoot on the forest floor, moonlight pouring over her like armor.

Her wrist mark glowed faintly silver-black.

The air around her hummed.

For a moment, Kael simply watched.

She looked… untouchable.

His wolf stirred.

Mate.

Kael suppressed it.

A branch snapped under his weight.

Ayla’s head turned instantly.

Her eyes met his.

Not gray.

Silver-white.

Glowing faintly even in human form.

There was no fear in them.

Only awareness.

“You shouldn’t be here,” she said quietly.

Her voice no longer shook.

Kael shifted back to human form slowly, maintaining distance.

“This forest is restricted territory.”

A small, humorless smile touched her lips.

“And yet here you are.

Silence stretched between them.

The bond scar pulsed painfully again.

Kael folded his arms across his chest, posture rigid.

“You caused that disturbance.”

“I didn’t mean to.”

“But you did.”

Her eyes hardened slightly.

“Is that why you came? To scold me?”
Kael’s jaw tightened.

He had come to ensure she wasn’t a threat.

That was what he told himself.

But standing in front of her now, with the forest bending subtly around her presence, he felt something unfamiliar.

Uncertainty.

“You’re unstable,” he said. “Whatever that was—it could endanger the pack.”

Ayla stared at him for a long moment.

“Endanger the pack?” she repeated softly.

He did not miss the way the shadows shifted closer to her feet.

“You rejected me because you believed I was weak,” she continued.

“Now you’re here because you think I’m dangerous.”

The truth of it stung sharper than he expected.

“I act for Shadowpine’s protection,” Kael replied coldly.

“And who protects me?” she asked.
The question lingered.

Kael had no immediate answer.

A sudden movement flickered in the trees behind Ayla.

Kael’s wolf instincts surged.

“Get down!” he barked.

Too late.

Three wolves burst from the shadows leaner than Shadowpine warriors, eyes glinting amber.

Nightfang scouts.

They lunged.

Kael shifted instantly, intercepting the first attacker mid-air. Their bodies crashed into the ground, claws scraping violently.

The second scout aimed for Ayla.

But before Kael could reach them
The air darkened.

Shadows snapped outward from Ayla like living whips.

They struck the attacking wolf mid-leap, slamming it sideways into a tree with unnatural force.

Kael froze.

The third scout hesitated.

Ayla did not.

Her eyes flared brighter.

The ground beneath the intruder’s paws trembled, black tendrils wrapping around its legs and dragging it backward.

The scout howled in panic.

This was not normal power.

This was command.

Kael stood still, watching as Ayla stepped forward slowly.

She did not snarl.

She did not scream.

She simply looked at the trapped wolves.

“Tell your Alpha,” she said quietly, voice echoing faintly as if layered with something older, “I am not prey.”

The shadows released them abruptly.
The scouts scrambled away without another attempt.

The forest fell silent again.

Kael remained unmoving.

His mind raced.

Nightfang Dominion had crossed into their territory.

Darius Nightclaw did not act without purpose.

And Ayla
Ayla had just defeated trained scouts without shifting.

She turned toward Kael.

“You were saying?” she asked softly.

For the first time in years, Kael Blackthorne felt the ground beneath his authority shift.

“You knew they were there,” he said.

“I felt them,” she replied. “They’ve been watching.”

Kael stepped closer instinctively.

“You are being targeted.”

“I figured.”

“Why?”

She held his gaze evenly.

“You’re the future Alpha. You tell me.”

The implication struck deep.

He had rejected her publicly.

If word of her power spread, she would stand alone.

Vulnerable.

Kael inhaled sharply.

“You will return to pack grounds,” he ordered. “Immediately.”

Her expression cooled.

“You don’t get to order me anymore.”

The bond scar flared painfully at her words.

“You are still Shadowpine,” he said.

“For now,” she replied.

That answer unsettled him more than the attack.

Ayla turned slightly, glancing at the darkened treeline.

“They’re not done,” she murmured.

Kael felt it too now.

Movement beyond sight.

Pressure in the air.

Darius was testing them.

Kael stepped beside her.

Not in front.

Beside.

“We’ll move together,” he said.

Ayla hesitated only briefly before nodding once.

They walked through Veilwood in tense silence.

Every few steps, Kael’s eyes flicked toward her.

She moved differently now.

Balanced.

Confident.

The moonlight seemed to follow her.

And for the first time, doubt entered his mind—not about her power.

But about his judgment.

Had he miscalculated?

Had he rejected strength thinking it weakness?

The forest edge approached.

Pack territory visible beyond.

As they crossed back into Shadowpine lands, the silver glow around Ayla dimmed slightly—but did not disappear.

Warriors rushed toward them, alerted by earlier sounds.

Selene among them.

Her gaze locked onto Ayla immediately.

Suspicion.

Jealousy.
Fear.

Kael stepped forward.
“Nightfang scouts breached Veilwood,” he announced.

Murmurs erupted.
Selene’s eyes narrowed at Ayla’s calm expression.

Kael continued, voice firm:

“From this moment forward, security doubles. No one moves alone at night.”
He paused.

Then added deliberately:
“Ayla Ravenwood remains under my protection.”

The words stunned even him.
Ayla’s eyes flickered briefly toward him.
Unreadable.

Selene’s jaw tightened.

The pack absorbed the shift in tone.

Something had changed tonight.

Not publicly.

Not declared.

But undeniable.

As the crowd dispersed under tension, Kael remained still.

Ayla turned to leave.

“Ayla,” he called quietly.

She stopped but did not turn fully.

“I will handle Darius,” he said.

Her voice came back steady:
“Handle yourself first, Alpha.”

She walked away.

Kael stood alone under the moon.

For the first time since the ceremony
He was no longer certain he had made the right choice.

And somewhere beyond their borders
Darius Nightclaw felt the shift in balance.
The game had begun.
