The Universe Where I Let You Go - 8

Chapter 8: The Night That Changed Everything

The car that had slowed near the building didn’t stop.

But it didn’t leave either.

Mira noticed it now the way its headlights stayed dim, the engine humming like a patient predator.

Aarav’s body shifted almost instinctively, placing himself half a step in front of her.

That single movement said everything.

“You’re not imagining it, are you?” Mira whispered.

Aarav didn’t answer immediately.

His eyes were fixed on the street, sharp and alert, the way soldiers look when they know the war has followed them home.

“No,” he said quietly.

“I was hoping you wouldn’t notice.”

Her chest tightened.

“So this is real,” she murmured.

“This danger you keep talking about.”

Aarav finally looked at her.

And in his eyes, Mira saw something she had never seen before
Fear.

Not for himself.

For her.

“This is why I tried to push you away,” he said.

“Not because I don’t feel anything.

But because once you’re seen with me… you’re no longer invisible.”

Mira let out a shaky breath.

“I never asked to be invisible.”

That stopped him.

She stepped closer, ignoring the way her heart was racing.

“All my life I’ve been careful.

Quiet.

Safe,” she said.

“And yet I was lonely.

Then you walked in with all your walls and shadows and suddenly I felt alive.”

Aarav’s jaw clenched.

“That aliveness comes at a price,” he warned.

Mira met his gaze, steady and brave.

“So does love.”

The word hit the air between them.

Love.

Unspoken before.

Unavoidable now.

For a moment, the world seemed to pause.

Even the distant traffic noise faded, like the universe giving them one last chance to turn back.

Aarav reached out, his fingers hovering near her wrist hesitating.

“If I cross this line,” he said slowly, “there’s no undoing it.”

Mira closed the distance herself and placed her hand in his.

“Then don’t undo it,” she said.

“Stand with me.”

Something broke inside him.

Aarav Vale, the man who controlled boardrooms and billion-dollar empires, gave in to the one thing he had never planned for.

He tightened his grip on her hand.

“Stay close to me,” he said.

“From now on.”

The car finally drove away.

But the threat didn’t.

Because somewhere else in the city, a woman stood by a glass window, watching the same surveillance feed.

A slow smile curved her lips as she zoomed in on Mira’s face.

“So this is her,” she murmured.

“The weakness.”

She turned off the screen.

“Let the game begin.”

Back at the building, Mira leaned her forehead against Aarav’s chest, unaware that the first move had already been made.

And for the first time, Aarav didn’t pull away.

He held her.

Knowing fully well
This night had just changed everything.
