A WITCH IN THE FORM OF A MOTHER

In Tripura, stories from the 1980s and 1990s are still told even today. People believe that during those times, ghosts, witches, and other terrifying evil forces were far more powerful and active. Today, I am going to share one such horrifying story from that era.

Once upon a time, there lived a widowed woman with her three children. One day, she told her children to stay at home and went to the market. In those days, the market was very far away, and the road was long and lonely. There were no other houses nearby, which is why the mother often returned home very late.

But one day, she never returned. Instead, a witch took her form and came back to the house.
The woman had three children—two daughters and a small son.

The elder daughter was about 14–15 years old, the younger daughter was 8–9 years old, and their little brother was only 1 to 1.5 years old—just an innocent baby.

It was a dark and silent night when the witch, disguised as their mother, arrived home carrying vegetables and pork.
Seeing her mother, the younger daughter ran happily and hugged her.

But the elder daughter felt something was wrong.
Her mother looked different that day—her hair was messy and her eyes were unnaturally red. Their real mother always kept her hair tied, as she was a responsible widowed woman caring for three children.

The witch suddenly grabbed the younger girl’s hand tightly and said with a strange smile,
“Daughter, today I’ve brought pork for you. Tonight, we will eat till our hearts are full.”
Then she walked toward the cradle where the baby boy was sleeping, picked him up, and said,
“Ohhh… my child is so beautiful. Look how soft his little hands are.”
As she spoke, her red eyes began to glow even more.

Terrified, the elder daughter said,
“Mother, you seem different today. What has happened to you?”
The witch quickly placed the baby back into the cradle and replied,
“Oh child, you three are my life. If I don’t shower my love on you, then who will I love?”
After saying this, she went into the kitchen, pretending to cook the pork.

After some time, the elder daughter heard strange sounds coming from the kitchen—as if the lid of a pot was being opened again and again. Confused, she quietly went to check, but by then the witch had already come out.

A little later, the witch once again picked up the baby and started taking him toward the kitchen.
The elder daughter panicked and asked,
“Mother, why are you taking my brother into the kitchen?”

The witch replied calmly,
“Oh child, he is my son too. I am taking him to feed him milk so that he won’t cry while we eat.”
The elder daughter remained silent, held her younger sister’s hand, and sat on the bed.
But soon, a terrifying sound echoed from the kitchen—
a sound like a dog chewing bones.

The elder daughter placed her younger sister on the bed and slowly peeked into the kitchen…
And what she saw made her soul tremble.
The witch had revealed her true form.
She had killed the innocent baby and was eating him.

The elder sister froze in fear. She ran back, hugged her younger sister tightly, and cried silently. She knew the truth—after their little brother, they would be next.

Just then, the younger sister whispered,
“Sister, I need to pee.”
Hearing this, the witch shouted from the kitchen,
“Ha ha, child, take your sister outside to relieve herself and come back quickly.”
At that moment, the elder sister came up with a plan.

She held her sister’s hand, took a water pot, and went behind the house. There, she made a small hole in the pot using a stone so that water would drip and create a sound—making it seem like her sister was urinating.

She covered her sister’s mouth so she wouldn’t make a sound, and quietly they both ran away. While running, she told her sister everything that had happened.
They finally reached a populated area and told the villagers the entire incident. By then, morning had arrived.

When the villagers went back to the house, they found only the bones of the innocent child.
What happened to the real mother…
and where the witch disappeared…
no one ever found out.
That mystery remains unsolved to this day.
