Laughter in Darkness

A suspense, romantic and psychological thriller

By

Kotra Siva Rama Krishna

“Anyhow Rose I want to hear about how feelings are more important than thoughts.” Looking curiously into Rose’s face, Tanuja asked her.

“In fact feelings are not more important but only important. Thoughts do help in evoking certain feelings and we do act basing on those feelings. If you think carefully, you can understand nothing in this world does happen without feeling. A feeling is the base for every action.” Rose said.

“It is really surprising to me. How that would be?” Sameera asked her.

“Just see why a person worries about his family. Just because he has a feeling that is his family and his feeling of responsibility makes him worry for his family. We can see many people who left their families on the roads just because they have no feeling about their family. Why your father looks after patients? Just because he has a feeling that it is his responsibility to look after the patients as he is a doctor. Why do you walk only on the left side on the road?  Just because you are having a feeling for your safety so you are careful like that. Why you are respecting your parents? Just because you have a feeling that they are your parents so you need to respect them so.” Rose said.

“Until recently she has no such feeling towards us. But now there has come a tremendous change in her.” Tanuja said.

“Is it is necessary to say about that even after you saw a change in me.” Sameera irritatingly said.

“Its alright” Rose remembered what she has read in the book ‘A Mansion Of Illusions.’ “If you carefully analyze, you can know a feeling is the base for every action.” Rose said.

“It seems you are right.” Tanuja nodded her head and said.

“But controlling the feelings also is just like controlling the thoughts. If you understand feeling something or other is just the nature of your mind and you cannot stop your mind from having feelings, feelings stop bothering you. You can observe your feelings separate from you then. Feeling envy, jealousy, anger etc. are just the nature of your mind and you cannot stop your mind from having those feelings. But an important thing here….” Rose paused a moment and said. “You can prevent yourself from acting basing on those feelings. Once you understood that feeling anger, envy, jealousy, etc. are just the nature of your mind, you can stop doing something basing on these feelings. When you became very much angry on someone but you understand that it is the nature of your mind to become angry unnecessarily also sometimes, you do stop yourself from doing something nasty. If you understand that it is just the nature of your mind having all sorts of feelings, you try to stop acting basing on them and eventually you can get control over your feelings.”

“We have a discussion on this point after we enter into this house.” Neeraja said. ‘You said these points to me also.”

“I think that I did not say an important thing to you also. That is; you have to maintain distance from the thoughts and feelings. However long you can remember that you are not either the thoughts or the feelings, you can bear them. If you become the feeling or the thought, that means, you lost the consciousness of yourself, it becomes so much painful to you.” Rose said.

“What you have said is absolutely true. Moreover you have mentioned a very important word ‘consciousness’ in it. Consciousness is the most important thing. If there is no consciousness, there is nothing.” Vinod said.

“I agree in no uncertain terms with what you have said.” Rose said. “If we don’t conscious about something what difference it is to us whether it is there or not. All the time we wake up, we are conscious about something or not. Do we have existence without consciousness? Apart from consciousness what we are?”

“The relationship of us with consciousness is just like the relationship between flower and smell, lake and the circles and sea and the tides. There is no smell without flower, no circles without lake and no tides without sea. But there can be flower without smell, lake without circles and sea without tides also. There is no consciousness without us but we are there even there is no consciousness.” Vinod said.

“But is there even a single moment without consciousness to us?” Neeraja asked.

“What about deep sleep? We do have no consciousness in our deep sleep.” Sameera said.

“In fact deep sleep is not something without consciousness. How you do feel when you are disturbed from deep sleep?” Vinod asked here.

“Very much irritated. Deep sleep would be so much sweet to me. If it is possible I want to remain in that deep sleep state all the time.” Sameera said.

“That means you are conscious about some pleasure during deep sleep also. So deep sleep is not something without consciousness.” Vinod said.

“What you have said is really a very valid point indeed.” Neeraja said.

“As most people think, deep sleep is not something lethargic or inactive state. Deep sleep is a boon to mankind from god. It is our real self. When there is no thinking or no feelings that’s what do remain and that is what we are.” Vinod said.

“Our discussion has started with a simple thing how to control our thoughts and these many number of very interesting things we have discussed.” Tanuja said with a surprising expression in her face.

Sameera was all alone in the old woman’s room. She was still on the bed just waking up from her sleep. In fact she did not want to stay in that room even along with her parents also but she could not express herself so to them. Whenever she has heard that grandma would have been just like her in her young age, she always was feeling quite odd. She really could not understand her feeling towards her grant grandmother. That many number of people were murdered just because of her! What really the story behind her?

Sameera closed her eyes tightly again and tried to slip into sleep once more but she could not. It was just like there was someone else also in that room apart from her. She got off from the bed, stood in the middle of the room and looked four sides and she could not see anyone. Then she has felt as if someone touched her on the hip and she turned fast back. There was no one at all to look at. While her heart was beating fast she has a feeling just like someone was breathing on her neck. She turned back so fast once again only to see blankness. She has the decision to go out of the room and took one foot ahead. Then she had seen it again.

The same black snake coiled round and with its head up. Its mouth slightly opened as if to bite. Sameera really did not want and not intended but her mouth opened and screams started coming out of it. She screamed this time even more loudly than before and in no time all the people pooled in old woman’s room.

“What happened? Why you are yelling like this again?” taking her into her tight hug, Tanuja asked her.

“That snake! That big snake! You people trampled it. Why it did not bite you people?” looking shockingly into their faces, Sameera asked her.

“None of us are that much blind to trample a snake. There is no snake here at all.” Rajesh said with an irritating expression.

“How many times you imagine a snake like this? Once again a big disappointment to us.” Arjun angrily said.

“Or that snake is somewhere here itself. If we look carefully we can find it at some place here.” Madhuri said.

“Oh, please don’t say it like that.” While her eyes were becoming wide, Sameera said.

“Its alright, come and take rest for sometime on the bed. Everything will be alright.” Tanuja said trying to take her daughter towards the bed.

“No, I am not going to stay in this room anymore.” Sameera said. “We all should go away from here now itself.”

“It is second time you have got an experience like this. You have the same experience again in the grandma’s room which you have in the kitchen. You have seen the same black snake which you have seen in the kitchen.” Aravind said.

They all came into the verandah from the old woman’s room and settled in the chairs there once again. After séance the chairs were once again placed in the verandah.

“What do you want to say?” looking angrily into the face of Aravind, Tanuja asked her. “Stop talking in riddles like this.”

“Some spirit has been trying to enter into Sameera I think. When a spirit tries to enter into someone, it tests that person like that.” Aravind said.

“Will you please stop that nonsense? None of us are ready to believe it.” Rajesh angrily said.

“In my opinion, just like in the kitchen, this time also it was just the hallucination of Sameera. Nothing more than that.” Rose said.

“It all started in her only after she entered into the house. Once she goes out of the house, there would be no problem to her.” Neeraja said.

“You are absolutely right. There is no necessity to think about it.” Rajesh said still feeling lot of irritation on Aravind and Sameera. He did not like that Sameera subjected to the hallucinations like that time and again.

“I stay with Sameera. There would be no problem to her. If any of you want to go, you may please go.” Looking into the irritating faces of his parents in law, Aravind said.

“Alright. We go into our room.” Tanuja said, got off from the chair and started going towards their room.

“Mom, please don’t go into that room. There is something in it.” with a fearful expression in her face Sameera said.

“Don’t try to make us also mad” Rajesh said and then they both went away from that place.

“I cannot blame them. It is just because that they cannot understand the nature of our mind and how it imagines and hallucinates sometimes.” Vinod yawned and said “If you people don’t mind I take rest in the upstairs room. Just call me if there is any necessity of me.” Going into the upstairs first room Vinod said.

Rose and Neeraja also got off from the chairs and went into their room in which Emily was taking rest.

Then Sameera, Aravind, Sunanda and Anand were left in the verandah along with Arjun and Madhuri.

“What you really want to say Aravind? You have been prevented by your mother in law from saying it but I want to hear it full just because you don’t try to say anything without reason.” Sunanda said.

“Yes, Aravind. Is it really some spirit is trying to enter into me? But for what?” Sameera asked him.

“We cannot say why spirits sometimes prefer to enter into human bodies. When you have that experience in kitchen, I did not get any doubt but when you have the same experience in grandma’s room also, I am thinking strongly that a spirit is trying to enter into you. Luckily, in time you have yelled like that and escaped from that danger.” Aravind said.

“How can I escape from that danger from now on?” the fearful expression in Sameera’s face became even more.
