A Prescription For Love

(A love story of doctors)

By Vaman Acharya

Dr. Prema, a renowned gerontologist, stepped off the plane in Bengaluru airport early in the morning. Her wellwishers were waiting at the exit gate to welcome. There was drizzling and the atmosphere was cool. Dr. Prema returned from Germany after successfully doing the prestigious research on reversing aging. She was ready to change the world. A  full-fledged laboratory was ready in her Prema clinic.

Prema  and her team of experts had spent several months in Germany  pouring over research papers and books on aging and regenerative medicine. Ultimately, the team members were able to crack the code on reversing the aging process. They were seriously thinking of experimenting on an old man. Everybody in the team was eager to be the first doctor to conduct successful treatment?

Dr. Prema's excitement and anticipation, she decided  to revolutionise the field of aging. Her confidence and determination, she selects her first patient on one day.

A 75 year-old man, Mr. Jayadev, who was her regular patient suffering from various age-related ailments, arrived at Prema clinic for routine check up. Dr. Prema thought about experimenting on this patient. Jayadev was aware of her project.

She asked,

“Mr. Jaydev, are you interested in undergoing the age reversing treatment? You are a science teacher and you don’t have any problem.”

He was surprised and asked, “Doctor madam, how is it possible? You might have successfully completed the research. Are you going against nature? I advise you not to jump hurriedly. I don’t want such unnatural treatment.”

“Mr.Jayadev, you are right. I assure you on the basis of my research that you have every chance of becoming a forty year old man.”

His wife Nayana, also a science teacher was laughing  patiently listening asked,

“Dr. Madam, my husband is right in expressing his opinion. Can you tell me a single case in the world, where an old man became a young man?”

“Nayana, as of today there are no success stories. You too know I was in Germany and worked with other doctors.  If I am successful, your husband will be the first person to get back his youth.”

“Doctor madam, do you know there is a saying, ‘everything has its own time’. In God's creation, birth, childhood, youth, old age and death are part of life. Nobody can change God's system. Your research is still at the initial stage. If we are not that lucky people to become young, let our next generation make use of your research,” said Jayadev smilingly.

Dr. Prema was disappointed and thought of another person to perform her prestigious experiment.

One week has passed. One day,  Bharamappa, a 70 year old patient came to Prema clinic along with his daughter Jayashree, a maid in a doctor's house and approached the doctor.

Dr. Prema thought to advise him to go for age reversing treatment. But his purpose of visit was different.

He asked,

“Madam,  please help to repair my  dilapidated hut.”

Prema felt uneasiness to reply. She agreed to help him with a condition of undergoing the age reversing treatment.  Bharamappa was illiterate and could not understand what it meant. His only concern was to get money. Jayashree, though she was illiterate but very clever. She put a condition that an amount of rupees five lakhs be paid before the treatment due to the risk of losing life. Dr. Prema had two choices. One, refuse the condition and search another person. Second, go ahead and negotiate for rupees three lakhs only. Jayashree agreed for rupees three lakhs.

Dr. Prema's fiance Dr. Sameer, a famous cardiologist in the same city warned her to stop the foolish efforts. Prema was eager to achieve success and ignored Dr. Sameer’s warning.

The date of treatment was fixed. As per the agreement amount paid to Jayashree on the previous day of the treatment.

She administered her revolutionary treatment on Bharamappa. He began to show remarkable improvements just after thirty days. His wrinkles smoothed out, his hair grew back, and his energy levels increased dramatically.

Bharamappa transformed into a young man, but  he began to experience strange serious side effects. He struggled to recognize his loved ones and lost his memories and experienced terrible confusion. Dr. Prema was taken aback by these complications.  She had anticipated some minor side effects, but she hadn't expected the worst situation.

She didn’t give up her confidence and worked to resolve the issue. Dr. Prema realized that reversing the aging process was more complex than she had initially thought. She had an hour long video conversation with her project teammates in Germany and they advised her alternative methods of treatment. She realised that it wasn't just a matter of physical transformation.  It also involves reexamining the brain's treatment to regain the memories and recognise the person. It took another month of intense therapy and treatment. But eventually, Bharamappa instead of  regaining  his memories and recognizing his loved ones, his condition became worse day by day. He didn't get  used to his new body.  Bharamappa breathed lost after a couple of days.

Jayashree became angry and threatened to file a suit in the court demanding more compensation. Dr. Prema requested Dr. Sameer to save her from the trouble. He was busy attending to patients and could not help her. Dr. Prema paid an additional amount of  rupees one lakh to Jayashree. Prema was in deep depression and frustration. By the time Dr. Sameer arrived at Prema's house, she was lying on the  cot in an unconscious condition. He took her to his hospital and was admitted to the ICU.

As Dr. Prema lay in the hospital bed, surrounded by the beeping machines and the sterile smell of antiseptic, she felt a sense of emptiness and despair. Dr. Sameer was in terrible tension. After six hours of medication and observation, she regained consciousness and saw a glimmer of hope and a reminder  that she was not alone.

Dr. Prema realised that her true strength lay not on her research and realising to love and be loved. She saw Dr. Sameer examining her condition.

An unforgettable memory of one year ago flashed to her mind.

I walked into the Dhanajaya multi specialty hospital's conference room and was about to start my presentation on an age reversing project in a couple of minutes. It was a bustling conference hall filled with esteemed scientists and researchers. I saw a handsome young cardiologist, Dr. Sameer, who was already seated. My eyes and his eyes start conversing in the silent language of love. Dr. Sameer too was taken aback by my striking smile and piercing eyes. I fumbled with my notes, Dr. Sameer rose to assist me. Our hands touched, and a jolt of electricity ran through both of us.

“Sorry for that,” I said.

“No need to apologise. I'm just glad that I could help you.” Dr. Sameer said smilingly.

We introduced ourselves with shaking hands. When I finished reading and showing video clips, there was continuous clapping. The meeting was over and Dr. Sameer appreciated me by saying well done.  Our conversation continued for some time.  As we parted ways, I had the feeling that I met someone extraordinary. person. This was our first meeting that we became lovers. It was love at first sight.

I came back from the old memory, when Sameer was standing before me. I got up and hugged him

Dr. Sameer was joyous and said,

“Prema, your ambition and drive for success led to your neglect of your personal relationships, ultimately leading to loneliness.”

“Sameer, you have not only shown me the right path but proved as my best life partner. Your prescription for love has worked wonderfully.”

Together, Dr. Prema and Dr. Sameer embarked on a new journey, one where love and science were unable to be separated.
