Predicament of a Girl

“I already told you the outline of the story. I tell you as much as possible about it now before we start anything about it. As you are going to be the main and typical character in it, you have every right to know about it before you start playing that.” Once they were settled in the village where they planned to shoot the movie, Tarang said to Charitha when they both were all alone at a place under a tree.
“As I have decided to put my heart in that character, it is very much necessary!” Charitha was feeling thrill and fear also while she was thinking that she was going to act in a movie.
“Your character’s name in this movie is Sasalla. She is the eldest daughter in her family followed by three sisters. She is educated and beautiful but mostly a village girl and not much known of the world around. Her cousin, Narendra, who is the son of her father’s brother, took a man, Aravind, the villain in our movie, from the other state to that house and introduces him as his friend. That friend of his cousin is handsome and he slowly makes friendship with you, I mean to Sasalla and enjoys her. Sasalla and that guy fell in love but her parents don’t agree for their marriage. Then he takes her to Tamilnadu without the knowledge of her family, puts her in a big house where there are other girls also of her age and enjoys her once again there and leaves that place promising her that he would return in the evening itself! As that guy does not return even after by the next day, she inquires with the lady in the house who that guy called as ‘sister.’ Then she comes to know from her that it is a brothel house and she is sold to them by her lover.”
On hearing that Chartia started feeling intensive uneasiness once again in herself and she has to put her whole effort not to show that in her face.
“Then she is forced to sleep with the guys there just like the other girls in it and among them one is our Prameela and her name was Pallavi. Except Pallavi no one else there knew Telugu and that is one reason for you both to become friends. In fact I did not think of Prameela to engage in that character and engaged some other one to play that role but thought you would feel more ease if Prameela also is involved in the story so I am going to engage her in that character.” He paused for a second looking keenly into the face of Charitha.
“You are indeed right! Thank you very much!” with a grateful expression in her face Charitha said even though she was feeling quite uneasily inside of her.
“Then the hero character enters into the movie. He has also come for that to that house and has it with Sasalla after paying the heavy amount demanded by that lady. He is somehow rich and knows Telugu also, often comes to the house to have it with Sasalla and during that course he fell in love with Sasalla and wants to marry her. She has no objection to marry him but put two conditions.”
“What are they?” she just could not remain without asking them in the little pause he has given even she was feeling lot of uneasiness.
“One, she did not agree to make any payment to that lady for the release of her. She pressed him that they have to fight for the release of all the girls in that brothel house and put a stop to that prostitution trade there.”
“It is indeed very nice! If I were really in such a situation, I just try to do like that.” A smile was forced onto the lips of Charitha. “What is her next condition? I am feeling very much curious to hear.”
“Her next condition is.........” Tarang paused for a second before continuing. “..........that she would continue doing it even after marriage. That means, he has to agree for her doing prostitution even after the marriage too in her own liberal and free way.”
“What, I just cannot understand, what?” Charitha startled, her face was filled with a horrifying expression and she got off from the chair with a start. “Did I hear you right?”
“Yes, it is right.” Adjusting for more comfort in the chair Tarang said. “While doing it in that brothel house, Sasalla comes to understand how much necessary it is to men. In fact she feels so much happy while giving it to some unfortunate men. Ultimately she comes to the opinion that satisfying the sexual urge of the men is not bad but it should not be done in a forcible way like that. A woman should give it to a man with whole of her heart and happiness and she has a right to take some money for that to fulfil her necessities.”
“Absurd! Absolutely absurd! No woman in the society agrees with it.” Charitha yelled angrily.
“When I tell my opinions through my movies miss Charitha..............” Tarang also got off from the chair he sat “.............I don’t bother whether people do agree with them or not. I just tell whatever I want to tell.”
“But it is inconceivable! Moreover prostitution is illegal in our country.” Charitha slumped once again in her chair with the same shock and surprise in her face.
“Not everywhere. Anyhow she starts a battle also to make it legal everywhere in our country that prostitutes can do it in their own way wholeheartedly for money. She further propagates that prostitutes can marry, have families and children while practicing their prostitution.” He paused for a moment but said before Charitha said anything. “What she establishes more is a woman need not be a prostitute to provide sexual favours, every woman should have a right to provide sexual favours and earn money basing on that for her family necessities. If prostitution is not wrong for some set of women it should not be wrong for any set of women. But practicing prostitution either on part time or casual bases or on a full time basis should be at the liberty of women and no woman should be forced to do it.” Tarang also sat in his chair once more.
“Preposterous! Absolutely preposterous!” the horrifying expression in Charita’s face was just the same. “You have the audacity to say that every woman can provide sexual favours! Even the dignified and decent housewives also!”
“If she likes, if she wants certainly every woman can irrespective of the point to whichever category she may belong. She should have the freedom to charge money for it or give it absolutely free.” Tarang sighed heavily. “But there should be no coercion or force on women to do that.”
“If you produce your movie with a concept like this.............” Charitha did not really want to say it like that but could not remain without saying. “.............I am not just feeling fear that it would become a big flap but I am feeling fear of the reaction from the society. Are you thinking that your audience do bear if you say even housewives also should have liberty to practice prostitution?”
“I never do bother about the reaction of the audience or success of my movie. I just concentrate on saying the thing in the exact way I want to say. If my movie is going to be an utter-flap because of the controversial subject, let it be. I have no objection. The only point I do concentrate is; whether I put the point in the way I want or not.” There was firmness in his voice and seriousness in his expression. “Anyhow it is your desire, is it is not? That my movie should become a big flap and not many people see you in such a way in that.”
“I am sorry. I am absolutely sorry. I should not have said it like that.” Charitha’s face was immediately filled with a regretful expression. “It is your story and you have right to direct and produce in the way you want. I promise you once again that I do put my heart and soul while acting and I wish great success to your movie.” She just remembered then what her father said.
“Thank you very much Charitha, thank you very much! I am really feeling very much happy hearing it so from you.” suddenly Tarang’s face was lit with a happy expression. “Now I tell you what we are going to shoot in the very beginning of the movie. Introduction of that villain character to you and his trying to get your attention. I am the dialogue writer also and I tell you what you do say to him. Your conversation does go in Telugu as you are a Telugu girl. For naturality I want your conversation to be only in Telugu and in the background it shall be translated into Tamil. That villain character also talks Telugu and his conversation will also be translated into Tamil in the background for the understanding of those state people.”
“Indeed good thinking!” Charitha smiled and said and she was now feeling a fresh uneasiness after hearing the concept of that story. “Anyhow will there be songs in this movie? Do I need to dance?”
“There are no songs in this movie and you need not dance at all.” Tarang laughed and said. “I thought usual songs in this movie just appear unnatural so I want to produce it without songs.”
“You really saved me from a big trouble.” Charitha also laughed relaxingly feeling lot of relief in herself. This was one other point for which she was feeling extra uneasiness and wanted to ask for a long time but did not ask till then.
“Alright, alright” Tarang nodded his head and said “The person who is going to play the character of that villain is Sarath, a hero in fact. It is I who introduced him first by projecting him as a hero in one of my Tamil movies and that picture has become a big hit and now he is playing good roles in the movies. I thought he would be the best person to our villain character, when I proposed it he agreed to the same and he would be here at any moment. As soon as he comes, I introduce him to you and even he is in the state of Tamilnadu and speaks Tamil, his mother tongue is Telugu and he speaks it very nicely. The other reason for my selecting him to that character is that. I introduce you the other characters of the family of the character you are going to play and they all also speak Telugu. But this runs only half an hour or so in our movie and then we need to shift ourselves to Tamilnadu and from then on the whole picture shooting will be there.”
“I have no objection.” Still feeling uneasily Charitha said.
“Here he is coming!” suddenly looking at a person who was coming towards them, Tarang said and stood up.
Charitha also stood up along with Tarang and without being told she understood he was that Sarath. But what indeed struck her odd was he was indeed handsome and was appearing like a soft character. How such a smart boy can play a villain character like that?
“How do you do my boy?” hugging him and looking into his face as soon as he came near to him, Chaturna asked him.
“Of course, very much fine!” then he looked into the face of Charitha and said “You are right sir! You have got the exact person suitable to your heroine character.”
“How could you know that I am the heroine without being told?” Charitha knitted her brows together.
