Behind the Mask

You know a person whom everyone likes? And maybe you start to think that person is good too and maybe they are actually good until you see a version of them no one else has seen and it breaks you, that person who you thought would understand you the best, starts accusing you and when you try to explain yourself they get even angrier, a slap would have been better, that would have hurt less but those words those actions they give you a trauma and it gets worse if you have to meet that person everyday where that person is everybody’s favourite but only if they knew. Those words, that particular scene repeats in your mind like an endless loop.

There was a girl and a boy, it appeared from their actions that they were a couple, this generation is complicated so they always said they were “Just friends” but only god and they know what they were.

They decide to meet in a park and walk. They were walking together and laughing at some jokes, nothing more, normal right? But no!! Her grandfather was walking in the same park and he noticed them. He lost his temper and went where they were walking.

“Trisha, are these the sanskar (manners)we gave you?You have ruined our family name. I am shameful to call you my granddaughter!!

Since childhood Trisha had been very close to her daddu and spent most of time home with him so this sudden reaction of him gave her chills and she was about to cry. She was an adult, she could take her own decisions and choose to be anywhere with anyone but you cant say those things in an Indian household.

She tried to talk to him and explain her situation but before she could do that her daddu spoke again.

“Trisha you have fallen in  my eyes, you are not the same Trisha to me now, more lies and I will slap you. You are grounded!! you have been spoiled so much that you sold the dignity of our house.”

Trisha was already emotional and hearing these words she started crying.

But imagine if instead the boy’s (whose name is Aakash) his grandfather was there. Would he say all those words to Aakash? No!! maybe he would tell him to say what was between them and be happy about it and accept it and even tell him to come to home for tea. Because typical Indian mentality “ladka hai na” (he is a boy) so he can do anything he wants with anyone, but when girls do it, they bring down dignity of their family blah blah blah…

No matter how many centuries have passed but the inequality remains.

We teach girls ‘how to be’ so that anything bad doesn’t happen but we don’t teach boys ‘how to behave’ and that’s why they think they have every freedom and they can do anything with anyone.

We talk about ‘how to be a better society’ but we never implement it and that my friend is the reality of the society we live in.

“Beti bachao, beti padhao” is the slogan we use.

How about we start “beta sudharo, behtar samaj banao.”

Its high time we stop blaming girls and give the freedom instead of letting boys believe they own girl’s freedom.

SHE WASN’T RAPED, HE RAPED HER.

SHE WASN’T WEARING SHORT CLOTHES, HIS INTENTIONS WERE CHEAP.

Wether it be a small incident of walking together in a park with someone you know or a small girl facing sexual assault by an (known/relative) adult.

How can it be always “her” fault??? It is not!!

We need to be a better society. Well you are a part of society so start the change within you first!!!
