The Angel Inside - 61 Dread

Author's POV

Dust, Blood, Chaos...

Disaster

An asylum that had been treating Mrs. Park for her namesake mental sickness had turned into a full-blown tragedy. But there was someone who enjoyed the misery to its fullest.

There she sat with an amusing smirk playing on her lips. She had decided to end it today.

Her victim's suffering?

Nah..

Just get done with her revenge and start anew.

She sat a few meters away in the empty white room, her brown tiger-like eyes inking with amusement as if she were staring at some masterpiece. Well, that was what she made all these months.

She suffered torture for years, broke through it and ended in an unfair world of reality where she was torn down and tarnished. But her survival instincts were the only boon that kept her going.

Her eyes peered at her surroundings, her lips tugging at the bland cigarette that stayed still between her teeth. The room was white.

Everything was white. Once. Each piece of equipment was white, contrasting her black outfit, making her look out of place. Her lips curved into a cunning smile as it landed at her victim who sat crouching on the floor, painted in white.

It was called the white room torture. Simplistic yet it could drive a human mind crazy, and bring in hallucinations. The process of this torture included the victim being imprisoned in a white room and tortured by starving them of colours. The ones punished were painted white and were given white food and drinks, all that existed in the room was white.

The lack of colours would impact the human brain to the point where one could lose their mind and drive towards insanity.

Mrs. Park had surely lost consciousness while banging her head on the wall just so she could see the colour of her blood which humans luckily had red.

Her captor's eyes darted to the walls which were a mix of dark crimson and white. The white wall contained stains of red fingerprints that Mrs. Park had made. Some were freshly smeared while some stains looked old. She scanned the room that had sheer evidence of pain and torture. She felt content.

But today was the last day. Her tattooed hand held a vintage camera while she stood up from the place, gracefully and predatorily walking around. Her index finger danced at the shutter button snapping a click of the room as if it were a masterpiece.

She finally placed the camera on the white table once she had clicked enough pictures to store in an album. She crouched down to the floor near Mrs. Park, her index finger poking the bare minimum flesh that Mrs. Park was left within her cheeks.

The glass of water that stayed still near her was now splashed over Mrs Park making her jolt. Her eyes flicked open looking for any possible danger. All she saw in front of her was the devil. She was smirking at her.

This time she wasn't facing someone unknown in a mask. Her pupils dilated, eyes turning wide, lips parting in utter shock but she couldn't utter a word. She mumbled something incoherent, lack of teeth had restrained her fluency of speech.

"aammii..."

Her body trembled. Her eyes filled with terror, witnessing her worst nightmare. Her stepdaughter was back from the dead.

AMY.

Amy had a smug smile, her teeth clenching the unburnt cigarette in between. Her hair was shorter than before making her look like a boy.

But Mrs. Park didn't stare at Amy's face anymore. She started at her outfit which was black in colour. Her eyes didn't blink. She didn't remember how long she had seen any other colour than white.

Amy: Mother.

Amy now sat cross-legged on the floor near Mrs. Park.

Mrs. Park tried to speak but she couldn't.

Amy: It must be so adventurous, having no sense of time, place or even days. How did you survive? So sorry. I remembered you got no teeth. Sad. Here have a pen and paper.

She spoke with pity which wasn't real.

With that, Amy kept a pen and paper in front of her. At the same time, Mrs Park could only watch and wonder what was about to happen. Her shaking hands got ahold of the pen and paper. She had even forgotten how to hold a pen, her grip was childlike. Her fist clenched around the pen as the nip crashed into the paper scattering the ink. She was trying hard to write and at last, she was successful in forming a word on the page.

It said 'sorry'.

With that, she wailed and sobbed bowing down at Amy's feet to beg for mercy and forgiveness.

Amy: I see... you're guilty. But. It's too late. Mother. You didn't listen to me in the past. You wished me dead. Why do you think I'm gonna spare you?

With that, she chuckled in mockery.

She fished her hand in the pocket finally getting ahold of a lighter in her pocket. Bringing it close to her face she lit it, making Mrs. Park jolt in surprise. She hadn't seen flame all this time.

Amy proceeded to lit her cigarette as she inhaled a puff from it, releasing the smoke right at Mrs. Park who sat in front of her.

Amy: Hey! I forgot to show you my masterpiece. You see I'm gifting it to your lovely daughter.

She giggled with excitement, looking innocent, she held a key chain in front of her. Mrs. Park was doubtful as she looked carefully at the object. Until she realized, the keychain was made up of teeth.

Her teeth. It dangled with slim chains, some of it carved into initials of letters.

It formed a word. D.I.E.

With that, Amy continued to laugh until she was lying back on the floor. Mrs. Park couldn't control herself and pounced on Amy with the motto of killing her. Her hands wrapped around Amy's neck, adding pressure to evoke suffocation. But Amy's laughs didn't stop even once. It felt as if she was making fun of her.

All Amy did was just flick the burning stick onto Mrs. Park's forehead making her jerk away instantly, while she continued to chuckle.

Amy: Listen up bit*ch it's your last day. I'm gonna meet you someday. Somewhere. In hell.

With that she got up from the floor, ruffling her short bangs, as her finger combed through the strands making it fit for a style.

She heard Mrs Park yelling something. She was sure, she had been spurting profanities but who cares? She stood up from the floor, a smirk decorating her face, she lit the lighter again her grip loosening making it freely fall to the floor.

The floor instantly caught on fire. Mrs. Park came back to her senses and was too late to realise that she was in a death trap. Her hands were chained to the wall. She couldn't escape, the flames had surrounded her. She saw Amy standing away at a distance, smoking. The fire ignited and spread rapidly, illuminating the room in yellow, flames reaching to where Mrs. Park stood as it crawled to her body.

Amy sat back on the chair that looked more like a throne of her own, looking at the other corner of the room burning. She didn't move, she wanted to see her tormentor facing the worst death by her own hands. She heard screams of agony filling the room while her smirk didn't waver one bit. Her eyes reflected the flames.

Flames of revenge. Of which she was finally over with, she puffed the stick, smoke escaping off her lips. With that, she left the place, once she was out of the particular section of the asylum where Mrs. Park had been kept, the room was wholly consumed by flames. The flames were visible from afar as people rushed out of the asylum in panic.

Jay's POV

The day had passed in a blink with the hurl of noting and listing things that were required for the kids. The weight of responsibilities dawned upon me, I finally realised that running an orphanage was not an easy task.

But I was more than happy to explore and bring good to people. After a tiring day, my eyes glanced at the window only to find the moon shining brightly and illuminating its surroundings. With the thought of winking asleep, my steps wandered out of the cabin unintentionally landing in a room that had noises of maybe a TV. I entered in looking at the supervisor who sat alone watching the news.

My eyes darted at the TV and my brain had snapped. It was Mrs. Park's image on the screen. The reporter discussed her mental health condition while the split screen displayed the CCTV footage of the asylum where Mrs. Park was being treated. The building was black and burned. The firefighters were still trying to put off the flames. They declared Mrs. Park to be dead.

I couldn't believe my eyes. I didn't feel anything for a while and kept blankly staring at the screen.

Maybe.

Maybe it is what is called karma.

That she deserved.

A minute later I gradually took the remote, switching the TV off. The lady beside me was dumbfounded. The next moment my hands shoved into my pockets and I walked out of the room as if nothing had happened.

I finally reached the parking lot under the open dark sky but instead of fishing for my car key, I lay on the car's bonnet as if it were my bed and enjoyed the sky, filled with stars and a bright crescent moon shining in between. As empty and peaceful as this place was the back of my brain had been blaring alarms.

I was being followed. And I knew that my lovely stalker had been watching me and my doings. I smiled to myself. I decided to see for myself and enlighten myself about their existence. For a while I enjoyed the silence until I casually rose up from the place jumped to the ground, and getting inside the car I drove out of the place.

My eyes glanced at the rearview mirror finding the road deserted. A few minutes later I saw a black car trailing behind me, like every day they seemed to silently follow me, I realized that they meant no harm if they wanted they could kill me and wipe off my existence. But I was curious, to test their patience I decided to change my route today, I made a harsh drift to the right which was unlikely of my daily route, for a while I thought they had lost track of mine but how wrong was I?

I saw the same car reappear behind me.
I smirked to myself speeding my car even more and like I had expected they were now chasing me. I knew the lane was empty and I continued to increase my speed until I made my tires screech making my car turn in their direction.

I knew today was the day for a proper introduction, killing the engine, and unlocking my car's door I climbed out. The glowing streetlights made it harder for me to peek at them through the glass. I took slow steps towards my car's bonnet, while I had a gun tucked behind my waistband but I rather took a seat on my car's bonnet. I patiently watched them, indirectly asserting them to show themselves and their motives.

30 seconds.

Of dead silence while their headlights finally turned off and I hummed in silence, swinging my legs at an inch height being least bothered if they could open fire on me right now and I could be a dead meat within a matter of seconds.

But I acted careless. I finally found them opening the car doors. It was two of them. A man and a woman in masks. Their steps were sceptical and finally, they made it to stand in front of me thinking about any possible danger that could linger around them.

Jay: I see that's quite unfair that it's two of you against one. Now tell me why are you guys behind me? What do you want?

I questioned such serious questions in a very idiotic and unserious manner as if I was having some casual talk. Not my fault. My drawers were filled with letters of death threats, each of them demanding me to shut the orphanage and leave the damn country. So, such bluffs meant nothing to me. I had turned a blind eye to them even though there were multiple attempts on me for a kill. But maybe I had purchased God's premium package to survive the attacks.

The woman stepped further removing her mask, an indirect body language that she trusted me and I meant no harm. She glanced at the man beside her eyeing him into doing the same.

Now both of their faces were visible.

Woman: My name is Laura.
She introduced herself.

Man: Fredrick.
While he didn't seem to be in a mood for conversation.

Trying to throw away the awkward silence between me and my stalkers I cleared my throat.
Jay: Let's talk somewhere peaceful.

Fedrick: This place is already resting in peace.
He deadpanned while I silently glanced around and he was right not a single vehicle had passed for the time being and there was a graveyard nearby.

Well, shit.
Not like I cared.

Jay: Fine by me. It's 2 months, 26 days, 23 hours and 46 minutes that you guys have been tailing me. So why are you guys putting in so much effort? I don't have anything on me.

Laura's eyes widened at my words, guess she wasn't expecting me to be so detailed and let them follow me intentionally for roughly 3 months.

Laura: I guess you didn't know. You didn't do anything about it.
She muttered to herself.

Jay: You were quite obvious.
I spoke playfully moreover flattering myself on which Fedrick rolled his eyes and stared at me with a deadly glare.

I scoffed predicting him to be quite jealous of Laura having my attention. While Laura looked clueless to decode our eye talk.

Jay: Now let's get to the point. Why are you here?

Laura: We wanted to know if you are working for the welfare of the society or not.

I quirked my brow at her words.
Jay: What do you mean?

Fedrick: We wanted to confirm if you were a part of a human trafficking syndicate.

My eyes snapped at him. What the hell of bullshit were they spewing.
I was speechless.

Laura: Who sold this property to you?

She looked at me eager for a reaction.

My jaw dropped at their absurd and lewd statements. What in the world were they being delusional about?

Jay: It belonged to my late wife.

I saw their faces switching from dread to shock. But I had a much more important question to ask.

Jay: Who are you guys?
I folded my arms to my chest, eyes darting with suspicion.

They glanced at each other in anticipation finally looking back at me.

Laura: Your orphanage was once our home.
Her eyes held emotions partially twinkling with tears that had gathered in the corner of her eyes.

I stood dumbstruck at her words.
