The Angel Inside - 59 Revenge

Jay's Pov

Making peace with myself was the biggest step I ever took. It took me months to get back my mental stability—to be specific, 6 months after the last court hearing. I had suffered panic attacks and insomnia, and I was basically trying to delete that burning building from my brain while I was on the verge of breaking down. Yet, I had to live for my family. My mom had suffered along with me, she had spent sleepless nights just to attend to me and comfort me. I couldn't let her down. The year was almost over; my life was a mess yet I was still trying to find my solace somewhere at the end of November.

And there I stood, standing in front of giant gates that hovered like a one-story building. I was literally standing in the middle of nowhere—no locals, no shops, no towns, or anything. God knows why I even decided to visit it.

The whole place was covered in green; no one would even think of any building being located in such a place. What kind of evil motivation was it that made me decide to land at this place?

I looked around the place, my hand holding the large keys of the lock that had been dangling onto the gates. This place belonged to Amy, who had left me and compensated me with two of her lavish properties under my name and control.

One was 'The DIVAS', whereas the other piece of property had been a mystery to me, so out of curiosity I decided to visit it. I didn't know what had been awaiting me. I peered around to find any traces of human bodies around but I couldn't expect anything anyway.

I made a move by pushing the key into the lock, which seemed rusted and jammed. Maybe it was abandoned for years or maybe decades?
I jerked and twisted the key in hopes of unlocking it, but my efforts were futile. Soon I heard a roar of engines from afar. A car drove past the long road, finally stopping near mine.

The door was pushed open, revealing Alex, who had climbed out of the car. He had a small smile on his face. I was so ignorant in my pain that I couldn't notice that his once bright, charming smile had dulled. He was barely trying to smile.

He walked towards me.

Alex: you could have told me. Let me help.

The next few minutes passed by with Alex, who had sorted for an axe and finally broke the lock after random turns of striking at it.

We finally pushed the giant gates, as noises irked me coming straight out of a horror movie.

Giving doubtful glances at Alex, I took a step, moving inside. The place was huge, like a mini-world of its own.

Jay: What's this place?
I spoke, astonished.

Alex: This isn't just some piece of land, Jay. It was an orphanage, established by Aunt Lily (Amy's mom). She had this dream of bringing kids home. But, she passed away, and Amy's stepmother tried all she could to demolish this place. She even tried to sell it but Amy had fought hard for years to get this place and start the orphanage again. She wanted to complete her mom's wish...But maybe...it was fated to wait even longer.

I looked around the place—a mini garden, a playground, a huge colourful building that felt like a school, or maybe a home where the kids stayed. In the centre stood the office entrance. I guessed.

I looked at Alex, who looked nostalgic; his eyes glistened, maybe at the memories he had made here. I decided to bring him back.

Jay: Where did the kids go after this place was closed?

Alex looked at me with a gaze that I couldn't comprehend. Hurt. Was it? Maybe pain?

Alex: Some were shifted to other orphanages, while others were sold to gangs by Mrs. Park. She wanted to frame (Amy's mom) aunt.

I could feel my blood boiling; she was truly evil. I couldn't comprehend how her true self had been hidden for so long. I decided not to ruin my mood for now and work for what I had come for.

My steps never halted, unconsciously moving to the office that had been covered in dust. Pushing the door open, my nostrils filled with dust, making me sneeze.

Covering my nose with a handkerchief, I stepped in, getting rid of spider webs on my way I looked around at the massive lobby, with furniture set up for the receptionist, as I saw the stairs leading to the office.

The place I thought was just some piece of land was the most important part of Amy's life. But why did she even hand me this property?

Alex: How about we give a makeover to this place? Let's start it again. You are great with kids, too. What do you say?

That was an answer.

She knew how well I could handle kids. So she did want me to start this place for her.

Jay: I was thinking the same.

I reply after a pause.

In the next few days, we plan to hire an architect who will help us rebuild this place. But in the initial phase, I clean the office with a few helpers.

My eyes darted at the dusty frames that had photos of kids in them. I wipe the frames clean, one by one. My eyes suddenly freeze at the frame in my hand. I wipe the glass clean, finally focusing my gaze on the picture again. It's a picture of a young couple and a kid with them. The lady in it was a literal doppelganger of Amy. But her hair was long and black and reached down her torso.

The only difference is that Amy's hair was never plain or a so-called version of being modest. They were short, shoulder-length, and purple along the strands, a loud statement that she never cared about the standards set by society for elite women. Her eyes resembled Mr. Park's—sharp, tiger-like brown—which was daunting yet alluring, unlike this woman in the frame.

I stare at the man beside her. I surely was straight, but that man looked handsome and tall, had a taut body, and his sharp features were so alluring. His face held happiness. They looked happy. My eyes went to the young kid—more specifically, a girl. She was cute. Her eyes were wrinkled, and her smile was wide. She looked pretty in a baby pink frock. Her hair reached her waist just like her mother's, beautifully adorned with a ribbon hairband tied in a bow as the ends tangled her hair in spirals.

She looked quite a fashion trendsetter. Her hands held a teddy bear twice her size, which was kept on the floor while her arms hugged its neck.

I stared at the picture for quite a while until it hit me like a ton of bricks.

This woman was Amy's mother.

MRS. LILY PARK.

.....................................

That man was Mr. Park. I never knew Mr. Park looked so charming in his 30s. No wonder Amy had inherited his best features.

And the young girl was none other than Amy herself!
No one would believe that young Amy was super cute.

I started cleaning the other frames, which were of kids who stayed there.
I spotted more pictures of them where Amy played with the kids.

Amy was still photogenic as a kid. These pictures were random. Candid. Unplanned. Yet, Amy looked so cute in each one of them.
I wondered how her innocence got ruined while she grew up. My mind imagined that Amy, who had never faced such situations, let alone joined the mafia.

Things would be so different; maybe she would be with me, happy, or maybe she would have married some other dude.

What was I even thinking?
Things couldn't be changed now.
I sighed as my reality seeped in.
She was no more.
I can't bring her back.
Anymore.
I need to make peace with it.

Author's POV
Hands tied, body drenched in sweat, wet hair strands sticking to her face, she whimpered in pain. She lay on a stretcher and was restrained like an animal in a laboratory. Her head throbbed in pain, and she squinted her eyes open, trying to get an idea of her surroundings, but yet she was blinded by the lights that fell on her face. The sudden illumination had made her voice screech in frustration. She felt one side of the stretcher being lifted as her back rose into a slanting position. Squinting her eyes open, she was now finally able to bear the light.

Her eyes trailed around, and she found herself in a hospital gown, realizing someone had changed her clothes. She mumbled incoherent words, trying to decipher what kind of situation she had found herself in. She had been trapped for months and now had lost track of day and time. She was at times bound in heavy chains and was given food in the minimum quantity, enough for her to survive and not think even once about escaping. Things didn't seem that bad.

Until a sudden strike of electric shock made her body jolt, she felt her neck prick, feeling the rough texture of the leash wrapping around her neck. It was where she was electrocuted.

"Who's this piece of s-"
Her yell was cut off by another electric shock coursing through her veins. She screamed and screamed as the current went on for a few seconds.

"Mrs. Park. You are being cured of the dis-ease you have caused people around you. Welcome to the first stage of treatment!"

That unknown voice had made Mrs. Park shiver; the voice sounded menacing and dangerous. She felt that dark aura. Though that person stood in the dark, she knew she had invited death.

The person in the dark took a step forward towards her. She tried to free herself from the restraints, but the more she pulled on her wrists, the more it hurt. Her lips quivered, trying to get some words out of her jaw but they remained stuck. A tall figure approached, clad in a white lab coat, face covered in a mask, only making the eyes visible, bangs covering his forehead. The figure halted, finally standing a few inches away.

Her eyes spotted the remote in his hand; she saw his eyes diverting to her and suddenly the electric shock coursed through her veins, catching her off guard and making her yell in pain.

"Oops! My bad!"
A low chuckle left his lips. Though Mrs. Park perceived him to be some stranger, that voice was of someone she had known for a long time, and she couldn't put a finger on it.

"Okay, so we start with the first stage of our treatment. So take a deep breath, Mrs. Park. Brace. Yourself."

Those words were enough to bring her chills; the idea was clear: this stranger meant no peace.

Mrs.Park: What do you want?

" Revenge."
A low mumble escaped through the mask, but she knew it was a smirk being hidden behind it.

"Okay, it's enough of Q and A; let's start. Since you are someone suffering from a borderline personality, it's important to get rid of stuff that could hurt you."

The so-called doctor approached her, finally staring right at her face. She couldn't anticipate what was going on in his head. His other hand, before being shoved in the pocket, was now out caressing her long black hair.

"You see, these hairs could choke you. You have beautiful hair; it's hard to take care of it. Isn't it? We need to get rid of them."

Mrs. Park: What?!

She screeched at his words. Before she could even react further, she saw that he had already walked towards the tray that had a pair of scissors. The next moment, she knew her hair was being cut to shreds. He didn't cut all of it at once but it was slow torture. She could see hair strands falling one by one until he had cut them to her ears. It went on for 15 minutes.

15 minutes.
And years of care and treatment had now turned into ruins scattered across the floor. She screamed her lungs out to stop him, wriggling hard to jerk him away but the damage was done. Warm tears cascaded down her cheeks.

"Karma is a bitch, isn't it? Well, have a look!"
That cheery voice was nothing but fake.
He brought the mirror close to her face, making her look at her reflection. She screamed and screamed. She didn't remember the last time she looked into the mirror and did her skincare and makeup. Her hair was destroyed. And her skin looked rough and old. She had done multiple treatments to keep her skin intact and not turn old through her age. But here she was, witnessing her years of treatment and care going in vain.

She spewed curses at him, which only returned as a chuckle that echoed and grew louder, making her frustrated. No one could hear her. Help her.

"BEAUTIFUL!"
A mock escaped his lips, while Mrs.Park glared boring holes in his skull.

"Oh, your nails are too long; we need to get rid of them too!."
Mrs. Park knew this person was well aware of her obsession with beauty and maintaining a perfect body figure according to beauty standards. This person had caught her nerve and was ready to wreck every treasure of hers.

"You killed your stepdaughter, didn't you? Tortured her for years. And killed her mother. Well, here is what we call karma, served hot on a silver platter."

Karma. These words were Jay's. He wanted to take revenge on her.

The person she thought she wouldn't see anymore had now turned into a devil with plans to eat her alive. The worst was about to occur; one thing she knew for sure was that she was going to be tortured to death.

The SATAN had arrived.

"Let's get started. Mother."
