The Gift of Gratitude

Rajesh was a daily wage worker in Kochi, Kerala. He lived in a small hut with his wife and two children. He worked hard to provide for his family, but the COVID-19 pandemic had made his life difficult. He lost his job due to the lockdown and had no savings to buy food or medicine. He was worried about his family’s survival and felt helpless.

One day, he heard a knock on his door. He opened it and saw a young man wearing a mask and holding a bag. The man introduced himself as Riyas kunhimon, the director of Akshya Dharma, a social initiative that provided food and groceries to the poor and needy people. He said he had come to give Rajesh a grocery kit that contained rice, oil, dhal, flour, soap, sugar and biscuits. He also gave him some masks and sanitizers and told him to stay safe and healthy.

Rajesh was overwhelmed by the kindness of the stranger. He thanked him profusely and asked him how he could repay him. Riyas smiled and said that he did not want anything in return. He said that he was just doing his duty as a human being and that he hoped Rajesh would do the same for someone else in need someday. He said that gratitude was the best gift he could give him.

Rajesh felt a surge of emotion in his heart. He realized that there was still hope and goodness in the world. He vowed to remember Riyas’s generosity and to pass it on to others when he could. He hugged Riyas and thanked him again. Riyas wished him well and left.

Rajesh went inside his hut and shared the grocery kit with his family. They were overjoyed and grateful for the unexpected blessing. They cooked a simple meal and ate it together. They prayed for Riyas and Akshya Dharma and thanked God for sending them an angel.

The next day, Rajesh got a call from his former employer. He said that he had reopened his business and wanted Rajesh to come back to work. Rajesh was delighted and agreed to join him. He felt hopeful and optimistic about his future.

He also remembered Riyas’s words and decided to do something good for someone else. He saw an old woman begging on the street and gave her some money and food. The woman thanked him and blessed him. Rajesh felt happy and fulfilled.

He realized that Akshya Dharma had not only given him food and groceries, but also a lesson in gratitude and compassion. He decided to join Akshya Dharma as a volunteer and help other people in need. He felt that it was the best way to express his gratitude and honor Riyas’s gift.

The Power of Awareness

Lakshmi was a housewife in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. She lived in a small apartment with her husband and three children. She was a caring and devoted mother, but she was also ignorant and superstitious. She believed in many myths and rumors about health and hygiene and did not follow the proper precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19. She did not wear a mask or wash her hands regularly. She also refused to get vaccinated or take her children to the hospital when they fell sick.

One day, she heard a loudspeaker announcement outside her building. She looked out of the window and saw a van with a banner that said “Akshya Dharma - Awareness Campaign on Health and Hygiene”. She saw some people wearing masks and holding pamphlets and posters. They were distributing them to the residents and explaining the importance of following the COVID-19 guidelines.

Lakshmi was curious and went downstairs to see what was going on. She met a young woman named Anjali, who was a volunteer of Akshya Dharma. Anjali greeted her warmly and gave her a pamphlet and a mask. She told her that Akshya Dharma was a social initiative that provided food, medicine, groceries and essential items to the poor and needy people in various locations of Kerala, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic situation. She also said that they conducted awareness campaigns on health and hygiene to educate the people about the prevention and treatment of COVID-19.

Lakshmi looked at the pamphlet and saw some facts and figures about COVID-19. She also saw some pictures of people suffering from the disease and some testimonials of people who had recovered from it. She was shocked and scared by what she saw. She realized that she had been living in a bubble of ignorance and false beliefs. She asked Anjali more questions about COVID-19 and learned how to protect herself and her family from it.

Anjali also told her about the benefits of vaccination and urged her to get vaccinated as soon as possible. She said that Akshya Dharma had arranged for a free vaccination camp nearby and that she could register for it online or at an Akshaya center. She also gave her some masks and sanitizers and told her to use them regularly.

Lakshmi thanked Anjali for the information and the items. She felt ashamed and guilty for her previous behavior. She decided to change her attitude and habits and follow the COVID-19 guidelines. She also decided to get vaccinated and take her children to the hospital for a check-up.

She went back to her apartment and shared what she had learned with her husband and children. They were surprised and impressed by her change of mind. They agreed to follow her example and get vaccinated too.

The next day, Lakshmi registered for the vaccination camp online at an Akshaya center near her home. She also bought some groceries from the center at a subsidized rate. She was happy and grateful for the services provided by Akshaya Dharma.

She also called Anjali and thanked her again for opening her eyes to the reality of COVID-19. She said that she had learned a lot from her and that she wanted to help other people like her. She asked Anjali if she could join Akshya Dharma as a volunteer.

Anjali was delighted and welcomed Lakshmi to the team. She said that she was glad that Lakshmi had realized the power of awareness and that she hoped she would spread it to others.

Lakshmi felt proud and excited. She realized that Akshya Dharma had not only given her food, medicine, groceries and essential items, but also a lesson in awareness and responsibility. She decided to join Akshya Dharma as a volunteer and help other people in need. She felt that it was the best way to express her gratitude and honor Anjali’s gift.
