The Angel Inside - 36 Panic and hearts

Jay's POV

My breath hitched seeing her lifeless. I panicked. My mind felt blank. I held her shoulders shaking her vigorously, in the hope to wake her up. My mind had now started playing games with me. Instead of Amy, I could see Grandma on her deathbed. My surroundings changed and instead of the bedroom, I was in the same hospital where my grandma took her last breath, where my 15-year-old self begged the doctors to bring her back to life. I remember how much I had begged to God and cried for her. As if my past came back alive.

I could only see my grandmother now. I started begging her to wake up and tell her how sorry I was. I kept mumbling sorry to her. My head hurt and ached and I could feel my tears cascading down my cheeks. The guilt was eating me, regretting my every action. I cried and cried.

My vision went blurry and things were getting back, I could see Amy again who had slight movements, she tilted her head towards me. Her hand slowly moved towards her hair, pushing it back.

Rubbing her eyes she looked at my teary ones. She looked perplexed.

Amy: What's wrong?

She spoke in a sleepy voice. I was angry and almost had a heart attack with her dead play, picking up the bottle of sleeping pills from the table I shoved it right to her face.

Me: What are these? You freaking slept like dead! How many pills did you take?

She looked away from me cause now she was caught in a lie.

Amy: Gosh Doctor. I ain't dead yet. I was just sleeping.

She spoke monotonously.

LIE! A FREAKING WHITE LIE!

Me: I asked how many.

I deadpanned her making my tone fall an octave lower, she sighed.

Amy: 5...uh no 6 maybe...I don't know.

I can't believe this woman. She was acting like a kid who had been caught red-handed by her mom for stealing candies. But these were sleeping pills.

Me: 6! Amy, do you know how harmful this is? You could die for god sake! You aren't gonna take'em anymore!

I spoke throwing the bottle of sleeping pills straight into the dustbin nearby, her mouth gaped open looking at me with disbelief. And all of a sudden her tone changed. From being 'I don't care' turned into 'I dare you. '

Amy: You know what! you have been inconsiderate about my rules. first. you .got .into. my room, second, you. are. getting. into. my matters.

With each word, she pushed herself near me getting closer to me and stopping just an inch away from me. Her voice was deep and dark, her eyes peered into my soul. My breath hitched. I attempted to push myself back from her. But even before I could make a move, her hand wrapped around my nape pushing my head closer to hers. I felt she would eat me alive, her tiger-like eyes were attractive yet menacing at the same time.

Amy: Your ignorance in my doings would be appreciated.

She whispered slowly, her voice sounded raspy. Even before I could react, her hand shifted from my nape to my face, caressing my cheekbone with the back of her fingers. Her touch trembled my insides, leaving goosebumps.

I finally came back to my senses, her spellbound had started to fade. I looked down and sighed while she stood up and walked towards the bathroom without another word.

Did she just flirt with me to shut me up?
The silence clouded the place and my mind wondered.

I never felt panicked at such critical moments. I should have rather carried out treatments but my mind felt blank. Being a doctor, I had always carried out treatments and surgeries no matter how much of a panic or dreadful situation it could be. May because I looked at them as my subject? With no emotions attached to them. Whereas with Amy I couldn't bring my brains to work.

One thing I knew was that She hadn't taken pills for lack of sleep. She had a reason, I feared if it was a severe one.

There was calm until I heard puking noises from the bathroom.

Was she sick?

I knocked on the door but there was no response.

Me: Amy are you ok?

The noises had stopped, the noise of water drops claimed that she was now showering. I decided to leave the room to give her privacy.

Me: Please come down for breakfast later.
I spoke again before finally turning to leave and same there was no reply.

The sound of a phone call ringtone resonated in the room, it was Amy's phone that shone bright and vibrated on her study table. I contemplated if I should pick it up or not. It flashed Alex's name, slowly picking it up, I answered the call.

(on the phone) Alex: hello Amy! You ain't coming today. I know you got your periods, so freaking resting for a week. Wait. Why don't you rest for 2 weeks with your pretty little husband? So yeah now rest for 2 weeks! No. How about I set a date for both of you next week? Yeah, great idea. Take care. Bye, sista!

Before I could even make him aware of me answering his phone call, he hung up. He sounded like an excited girl bestie who won't let anybody speak.

I felt kinda happy but wasn't sure if Amy would agree. I took my leave from the room and our house to buy some stuff for Amy. I didn't know what she liked or disliked. Before leaving I asked Ms. Jenny to make a hot water bag for Amy. Even though I asked Ms. Jenny about Amy's preferences, she was also clueless just like me.

I rambled through the store but wasn't sure what to buy. There were varieties of chocolates and sanitary pads. Though I always had an experience of comforting my sister and bearing her tantrums, knowing her choices and likes of her moody self. Amy was a different case. She was unpredictable, a sly one, who always knew how to turn around situations in her favor, whether by hook or crook.

Why is it so complicated?

Standing in the front of the sanitary pads section with a whole shelf with different brand names. My eyes wandered from left to right, totally perplexed. There was a girl nearby, she looked like a college student. Her eyes peered at me and my dumb state, delivering a sly smile.

" Girlfriend?"

She asked.

Me: wife.

She smiled at me. Her hand landed on a certain brand, handing it to me.

" This one is nice. You know, works for heavy bleeding. You should buy painkillers too, will help her."

I returned a smile with thanks as she left. The difficult task was now over. I bought all different types of chocolates and one of my favorite candies. Since yesterday was way boring, I decided to buy UNO and Chess, and also my favorite play station.

But I didn't know if Amy would play. Maybe I had an idea. I drove back home and surprisingly found Amy on the dining table having her breakfast or in other words playing with it. Her eyes found mine.

Amy: Where were you?

Her voice was rough. I smiled at her question bringing the bags of purchased things near my face, indicating her.

My eyes went towards Ms.Jenny who looked worried. Something was off. Her eyes gazed at Amy who had been looking at me. f

I inched near her and finally noticed her pale self. She looked worn out. Her hair were messy, yet deliberately tried to look decent.

She slowly stood up limping while placing her plate on the kitchen's island, food unfinished. She was in pain. Dragging herself with struggle, she stumbled on her steps, before she could fall I rushed towards her, holding her by her arm and pulled her back. She landed on me and tried to balance herself. I scooted closer to find her shivering in cold yet sweating as if it was too hot.

Even in the weakest condition she wasn't ready to give up and let me help her. Stubborn. If she continued to be like this she would fall and faint. I didn't let her decided and scooped her in my arms, taking her upstairs.

Amy: I can walk.

She whispered making me roll my eyes.

We entered her room as I made her lay on the bed making her groan in pain. Ms.Jenny was quick to bring the painkillers and the hot water pack for her. After treating her with pills, I finally placed the hot water bag on her abdomen, which immediately made her moan in relief. She didn't stop me from treating her, maybe she wasn't in her senses anyway. She had fainted.

An hour had passed, finishing breakfast already boredom, I planned to equip the empty room with the new PlayStation. I walked past her room upstairs. my eyes peered at her room's door. Should I approach her? What if she gets annoyed? Maybe the risk was worth it? Maybe later? Yeah later.

The empty room had been quite dusty, so it was a great time pass to give it a makeover.
Another hour had passed now I finally finished up setting the PlayStation and the room looked pretty decent.

It was almost afternoon, the lunch was already prepared by Ms. Jenny, while I helped her with the chores. The lunch was peaceful, and I discovered a new and different side of Amy who wasn't a CEO nor a professional business tycoon but a kid throwing tantrums.

It had been a hard time for me and Ms.Jenny to make her eat food, while she used all sorts of excuses to deny us. Her mood swings were rock hill, but in the end, we were successful. I had somehow bribed her with candies and games if she finished her food and surprisingly she accepted.

Time passed smoothly with playing games and enjoying chocolates, call it a cheat day, but it was fun. I felt like a kid once again, no one would judge me. I got to know more about her. Not gonna lie I loved her new childish side. Maybe she explored about me too like I did about her.

In the dead of the night, my legs walked downstairs to the open backyard where Amy was wide awake sitting on the couch nearby enjoying the breeze and a peaceful night.

Me: You aren't sleeping?

My voice sounded slurry which startled her making her turn to look at me.

Amy: Why are you awake?

Instead of answering, she questioned me.

Me: Because you are awake. You need rest. So sleep.

Amy: I can't.

I slowly inched near her, sitting beside her, she felt comfortable with me and wasn't awkward as before. I was slowly able to understand her personality, she wasn't an easy mix or a social butterfly, she took her own sweet time to get to know others and be comfortable with them. Behind that resting bitch face of hers she was someone who had trust issues. Maybe this was just the 10% of what I was able to know about her and there is more to explore.

Me: Why?

Amy: Someone threw my pills away.

S.A.R.C.A.S.M. Indeed.

Me: Why do you need them though?

She looked calm while she replied looking at the sky.

Amy: My life isn't that easy to let me sleep without worries. I need to force myself to sleep.

I looked at her dazed, anticipating her words as her eyes landed back at me. I decided to ease the tension.

Me: I mean there are other ways too.

I spoke as I remembered the lollipops that were left in my pocket, fishing them out I handed them to her while I unwrapped the other one for myself. A tender smile painted my lips while sucking on it as it melted its sweet and sour flavor on my taste buds, its sweet essence was one of my attractions of them being my favorite. I never get tired of them.

Me: These work for me.

Amy: So these are your sleeping pills.

She spoke gazing at the lollipop wierdly in her hand.

Me: No they work for everything. This can also help you calm your anger, sleep, sadness, and anything.

Amy: is it?

She questioned.

Me: It is.

I arranged her question into my answer.

Amy: What if this doesn't work?

Me: Do something that makes you happy.

Amy: And what if I don't know what makes me happy?

Now she was puzzling me. Then too I was trying to be a good therapist to her.

Me: Then try things, that might make you happy. I have an option 2.

I bought earphones, connecting them to my phone. Giving one of the buds to Amy to plug into her ear while I put the other bud on my ear. She looked perplexed but didn't deny my words.

Me: You know music is therapy too.

I smiled at her and surprisingly her lips curved into a smile while her hidden dimple had taken the shape on her cheeks. My heart bloomed. It was the first time ever she had smiled on me. The melody of the music played as the tunes lingered in the air, creating magic and bringing the string notes to life.

After a while Amy had been asleep on my shoulder, her hand wrapped around my arm as the moonlight glistened on her face, making her look ethereal, she had me whiplashed in her beauty which I never would want to let go of.
