It is all bananas

Banana means banana. What's new in it? Just remove the peel, and eat. Feel the softness and sweetness in your mouth to relish the taste.

But here in Bangalore I find that there are four or five varieties of bananas. Now they are seen in malls in all major cities.

So, one type is our normal banana. Spongy from inside, slighly white cream coloured inside and green from.outside. size at the most equal to your palm.

Another type we get here is ' Robuster'. Native of kerala, having arrived wearing their yellowish lungi, outer skin. Bigger and longer in size. Looking at the black spots from outside one feels they may be over ripe but firm from inside.

Inside colour is golden reddish, like that in a jackfruit, 'fanas'. Taste more sweet, as if jackfruit's soul has entered into it. The skin is less sticky and fibrous. If you fall on it, less likely to slip and break leg as in case of normal bananas. They are more durable. Can last upto a week.

These bananas are seen hanging outside small gallas selling paan bidi, local wafers and such things.

Third type is typically equatorial. Red skinned banana. They are fat brothers of our normal banana. Thicker in size and slightly smaller in height. From inside red golden, firm and more sweetish.

The fourth type is yellaki banana. We see this in malls in gujarat also nowadays. Yellanki is a place, perhaps yellahanka village from where this type has found its way in abundance.

Small in size but very sweet.

If you compare banana to a beautiful lady, then yellanki is 'padamni'. Top in beauty, sweet charm and a tiny figure.

Here, with sour and pungent chutneys made from tamarind and red chillies eaten in meals, after meals it is customary to eat a yellanki banana.

In temples these bananas only are offered to the Gods and given as prasad to us.

And besides eating this cheapest, sweet nutritious fruit, do you know some other usages of banana peeks?

It is said that those Robusta banana peel fibres are mixed in preparing cloth for smoothness and durability.
