Alexander III of Macedon, commonly known as Alexander the Great, was born on July 21, 356 BCE and died on June 10 or 11, 323 BCE. He was the son of King Philip II of Macedon and ascended to the throne after his father's death in 336 BCE. Renowned for his military prowess and diplomatic skills, Alexander conquered much of the known world of his time, significantly spreading Greek culture, language, and thought across regions from Asia Minor to India, marking the beginning of the Hellenistic era. During his youth, Alexander received rigorous training in combat and horsemanship from Leonidas and was educated in reading, writing, and music by Lysimachus. At 14, he began studying under the philosopher Aristotle, who influenced his approach to governance and cultural integration. Alexander's resilience and horsemanship were evident when he tamed the horse Bucephalus at a young age. His father's achievements laid the groundwork for his future successes, enabling Alexander to defeat the Persian Empire without outside help. While acknowledging his father's influence, Alexander viewed his accomplishments as divinely ordained, often referring to himself as the son of Zeus.
