Abraham Lincoln was born in a log cabin in Hardin County, Kentucky, to Thomas and Nancy Hanks Lincoln. The family faced hardships, including a move to Indiana due to land disputes, where they lived in a crude shelter. Lincoln's mother passed away when he was nine, which deeply affected him and strained his relationship with his father. After his mother’s death, his father remarried Sarah Bush Johnston, who encouraged Lincoln's education despite the family's limited resources. In 1830, the family moved to Macon County, Illinois, and Lincoln began working manual labor jobs. He became known for his physical strength and storytelling skills while living in New Salem, where he held various positions, including shopkeeper and postmaster. During the Black Hawk War in 1832, he was elected captain of a volunteer company but did not see combat. Lincoln's political career began when he was elected to the Illinois state legislature in 1834 as a member of the Whig Party.
