ગીરના જંગલમાં રસ્તો ભૂલેલો યુવાન પ્રવાસી કમલ એક નાની ગુફા પાસે પહોંચ્યો. સાંજ ઢળી રહી હતી અને આજુબાજુ ઘોર અંધારું છવાઈ ગયું હતું. ગુફાનો પ્રવેશ સાંકડો હતો, પણ અંદર કદાચ રાત વિતાવવા માટે જગ્યા મળી જાય તેમ હતું. કમલ ડરતા ડરતા અંદર દાખલ થયો. ગુફાની અંદર ભેંકાર શાંતિ હતી, ફક્ત તેના પોતાના પગલાંનો અવાજ સંભળાઈ રહ્યો હતો. થોડે આગળ વધ્યા પછી તેને ગુફાનો મોટો ભાગ દેખાયો. ચંદ્રનો ક્ષીણ પ્રકાશ ઉપરના છિદ્રમાંથી આવતો હતો, જેમાં ધૂંધળી રીતે આસપાસનું દેખાતું હતું. અચાનક કમલનો પગ કોઈ વસ્તુ સાથે અથડાયો અને તે નીચે પડી ગયો. ઊભા થઈને જોયું તો તે એક જૂની પેટી હતી.
