(૧૨૨) ૧૮ જાન્યુઆરી, ૧૫૯૭ એ ગોઝારી રાત ૧૮ મી જાન્યુઆરી આવી પહોંચી. મહારાણા પ્રતાપની જીવન સંધ્યાના ઇતિહાસમાં આ દિવસ ગમગીનીભર્યો હતો. મહારાણાજીની છાતીનો દુખાવો વધી ગયો હતો. આંતરડાની પીડા અસહ્ય બની ગઈ હતી. મન તો મજબૂત હતું પરંતુ તન વ્યથા આપવા લાગ્યું હતું. આંખો મીંચીને પોઢી ગયા હતા. મૃત્યુનો આભાસ આવી ગયો હતું. દૂર દૂર ક્ષિતિજમાં એક ધૂંઘળો ચહેરો દેખાવા લાગ્યો. એ ચેહરો હતો રાજકુમાર સગરનો મહારાણાનો ભાઈ સગર, પોતાની વિપત્તિ વેળાનો અડગ સાથી સગર. સગર મહારાણાનો છાયો બનીને જીવન જીવ્યા હતા. આવા સજ્જન ભાઈનો પણ વિયોગ નિર્માયો હતો. મહારાણાજીએ સાંભળ્યું હતું કે, સગર મેવાડ છોડી
