He lived in a village where families were large, and children were seen as valuable. On the festival of Vishu, he offered money to the children of his neighbor Gopal's family, giving progressively smaller amounts to each child, with the youngest receiving just one rupee. While the elder siblings accepted the gifts, the younger ones refused out of shame, not realizing that their reaction would determine their future rewards. Balakrishna later rewarded those who accepted with larger gifts, leaving the younger siblings to regret their decision. The story emphasizes that accepting small offerings can lead to greater rewards and reflects on how circumstances can change a person's behavior. Balakrishna, once well-loved, fell into frustration and alcoholism, which diminished his popularity. Over time, Gopal’s family moved away, losing touch with Balakrishna, leaving him a forgotten figure. Despite this, the sweet memories of their past interactions linger on. The story highlights the close-knit nature of village life, where everyone knows each other, contrasting with the anonymity of city living, and reflects on the simpler times when people had more time for one another.
