He attended Ananda College in Colombo, where he excelled in cricket, notably scoring 315 not out and taking all 10 wickets in a match, a record acknowledged by the Guinness Book of World Records. After his education, he played for the Sinhalese Sports Club and went on to represent Sri Lanka in international cricket, making his Test debut in 1982 against England.
