The global population of cheetahs is 6,500 to 7,100, according to a list of threatened animals from the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Africa is home to most of the cheetahs, which are extinct across Asia, except in Iran.

India was once home to the Asiatic cheetah but it was declared extinct in the country by 1952. The critically endangered subspecies, which once roamed across the Middle East, Central Asia and India, are now only found, in very small numbers, in Iran only.

Free-ranging cheetah inhabit a broad section of Africa inlcuding areas of North Africa, Sahel, eastern, and southern Africa. The two strong-holds remain in Kenya and Tanzania in East Africa and Nambia and Botswana in southern Africa.
