માત્ર માનવ આકારના પણ માનવ ન કહી શકાય એવા પચ્ચીસ હજાર લોકો નિદ્રાને હવાલે થયેલા હતા એ સમયે પાટનગરની એક વેરાન હોસ્પિટલમાં એક સફેદપોશ વ્યક્તિની આંખમાં ઊંઘનું નામ નહોતું. એનું શરીર દેવતાઓના ખાસ પહેરવેશ એવા સફેદ જભ્ભા અને એવા જ સફેદ પણ એના કરતાં જરા વધુ મજબૂત કાપડમાંથી તૈયાર થયેલા પાયજામામાં જરા વિચિત્ર લાગતું હતું. માત્ર કાપડની સફેદી જ નહીં પણ તેની શારીરિક રચના પણ તદ્દન નોખી હતી. જોકે દેવતાઓ માટે એ સમાન્ય શારીરિક રચના હતી. પાટનગરમાં વસતા દરેક દેવતા જેમ એના માથા પર વાળ નહોતા, એને દાઢી મૂછ તો શું આંખો પર ભ્રમરના વાળ પણ નહોતા. બહાર પવન ફૂંકાતો હતો. એકાએક બાળકના રડવાનો અવાજ એ સુસવાટામાં સંભળાયો અને એ સફેદ વસ્ત્રધારી આદમી ઊભો થઈ ગયો.
