રોજ એ સાંજ પડે એટલે જોબ પરથી આવી સીધી દરિયાની પાળે એકાંતમાં બેસી જતી. દરિયાની પેલે પાર આંખો ખેંચીખેંચીને જોવાનો વ્યર્થ પ્રયત્ન કર્યાં કરતી. ખુલ્લાં આકાશ અને દૂર દૂર સુધીનાં આ ડહોળાં ખારાં પાણી સિવાય કશું દેખાતું નહીં. આ તરફનાં છેડાનું પાણી હમેશાં ગંદું દેખાતું. રોજ તે એકસરખો પ્રયત્ન કરતી અને રોજ તેને એક સરખું જ દેખાતું. જો કે તેને પોતાને ય એ વાતનો ઉત્તર નહોતો મળતો કે એ રોજ અહીં શું કરવાં આવે છે! આમ દરિયામાં પેલે પાર સુધી આંખો ખેંચી ખેંચીને એ શું જોવાં માંગે છે! શહેરનો આ ભાગ સાવ અવાવરું હતો. થોડે દૂર ઝૂંપડપટ્ટી હતી ખરી, પણ
