Dholavira, located 250 km from Bhuj in Kutch, is a 5000-year-old city associated with the ancient civilizations of Mohenjo Daro and Harappa. It is considered one of the world's oldest towns but has been on UNESCO's pending list for World Heritage Site status since 1998. Despite being excavated in 1989 and included in the 2010 revised tentative list for World Heritage Sites, it has yet to receive official recognition. The Indian government's archaeological department uncovered this ancient civilization and proposed Dholavira for World Heritage status to UNESCO in 1998. Although UNESCO has recognized 911 sites globally, India has only 28 designated World Heritage Sites, with only one from Gujarat, Champaner, which showcases a blend of Hindu and Muslim architecture. Despite the efforts of the Indian government since 1998 to include Dholavira and other sites like Patan's Ran Ki Vaav as World Heritage Sites, these efforts have not been successful. Many countries with smaller populations have more recognized heritage sites compared to India.
