In the story "The Homework Monster," Zeus, the ruler of the gods, is troubled because children are not learning anything. To address this issue, the gods create a monster called the Work Monster, which has the power to make kids pay attention and do their work. However, the Work Monster inadvertently causes the gods to do unnecessary work instead. Frustrated, the gods send it down to Earth. Once on Earth, the Work Monster discovers a school filled with distracted children. Angered by their behavior, it casts a spell on them, compelling them to listen and do their work. The teachers are a mix of thankful, frightened, and jealous of the monster's power to control the students. As the Work Monster revels in its ability to make children obey, it eventually evolves into the Homework Monster, which distracts people from important tasks and instead makes them do pointless work. To further annoy the children who are reluctant to work, the Homework Monster invents homework, a task that students must complete at home.
